Microsoft has acknowledged that a recent Windows 11 update, released on October 14th as KB5066835, unintentionally caused problems with the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This environment is crucial for resetting or repairing Windows computers when they encounter errors or issues with drivers.
This issue prevented users from controlling the Windows Recovery Environment with their keyboard or mouse, making it impossible to use tools for restoring or resetting their computers. Microsoft quickly recognized the problem and started working on a solution, as it understandably caused significant disruption.
Just days after the issue was discovered, Microsoft has released a quick fix – update KB5070773 – through Windows Update for those using Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. This update addresses a problem with the Windows Recovery Environment.
Microsoft releases out-of-band updates only when critical issues need fixing immediately, outside of their regular monthly update cycle. Normally, Windows updates happen once a month, but sometimes a major bug or problem requires an extra update sooner.
It’s a significant issue when a Windows PC can’t be reset or recovered, and delaying a fix until the next regular update could leave even more computers stuck. That’s why Microsoft quickly released an update outside of its usual schedule to resolve the problem.
