Microsoft has declared that they will be closing the Movies & TV section of their online store as of July 18th. After this date, you won’t be able to buy any new movies or TV shows through the Microsoft Store, whether you’re using it on your Windows PC or Xbox.
According to a Microsoft support post released today, Microsoft is no longer selling new entertainment content like movies and TV shows on their official website (Microsoft.com), the Microsoft Store for Windows devices, or the Microsoft Store on Xbox consoles.
Now, when you navigate to the Entertainment section within the Microsoft Store application, a message appears stating “‘Microsoft is discontinuing the sale of movies and TV programs for purchase’, and the option to directly purchase these items has been taken away.
I personally noticed that the company has confirmed that individuals who have previously purchased Movies & TV content from their Microsoft Store can still access it. This is possible through the Movies & TV app, a downloadable application available on the Microsoft Store. The change seems to be in the storefront itself, which is being phased out.
It’s been a long-awaited development, particularly following Microsoft’s shutdown of its music streaming service, Groove Music, as far back as 2017. Since then, many have anticipated that Movies & TV would follow suit, and now that prediction has become reality. Microsoft has confirmed that they will not be issuing refunds for recent purchases in this context.
If you reside in the United States, you can leverage a service known as Movies Anywhere to synchronize your previously bought movies across other compatible platforms that also support Movies Anywhere. On the contrary, individuals living outside of regions where this is available will need to continue using the Movies & TV app for streaming their previously purchased content.
This development might prove problematic for individuals who amassed a substantial library of Movies & TV shows through Microsoft’s service over time. They will need to migrate to another platform to preserve their collection moving forward. Unfortunately, the convenience of having everything consolidated is no longer available.
To carry on enjoying films and TV shows on your Windows or Xbox devices, it’s recommended that you subscribe to external services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and similar providers.
Initially, Microsoft debuted Movies & TV as Xbox Video in 2012, which was an integral part of the Xbox Entertainment platform that allowed users to subscribe to a music service and rent or purchase movies and television shows. Over time, however, the company has gradually withdrawn from various sectors within the entertainment industry, with gaming being the only exception.
The services for Xbox Music and Xbox Video replaced the Zune Music and Zune Video, which debuted in the 2000s and were pioneers in streaming media. Now, with Movies & TV coming to a close, it signifies nearly two decades of Microsoft offering traditional entertainment content has come to an end.
What will happen to my purchased content?
According to Microsoft, any content bought through the Microsoft Store can still be streamed using the Movies & TV application, which will remain active.
Microsoft suggests that you can carry on watching your favorite films and television series, which you have already bought, through the Microsoft Movies & TV application on your Xbox or Windows device.
