Microsoft Teams is adding a long-awaited feature: control over what happens when you press the Enter key while typing a message. Soon, you’ll be able to customize how this key functions within the app.
Once this new feature is available, you’ll have the option to decide what happens when you press Enter. Currently, Enter sends your message immediately, which sometimes leads to messages being sent before you intended. With the update, you can choose to either start a new line or send the message.
A new feature, first noticed by XDA Developers, has been listed on Microsoft’s future updates plan. It’s currently scheduled for release in February 2026, but this date is subject to change.

You’ll be able to choose whether it sends the message immediately or simply starts a new line, which is helpful for writing longer messages without accidentally sending them before you’re finished.
Microsoft Teams playing catch up to Slack
Microsoft Teams is used by over 320 million people, but it’s still missing some features that others have. For example, Slack lets you customize what happens when you press the Enter key while typing a message.
The Teams team is constantly listening to user feedback and adding new features – they released 26 in August! However, the way these new features roll out sometimes causes confusion or annoyance.
User Cole C discussed this issue on a thread in the Microsoft Feedback Portal:
Teams really needs to allow users to use the Enter key for new lines, like in programs such as Word, PowerPoint, and email. Currently, it doesn’t offer this option, even though platforms like Slack do, and it’s a common expectation for many users. It shouldn’t be a difficult feature to add.
It’s happened before – features often arrive in Teams later than expected. For example, Microsoft only recently – this year – added the ability to choose where Teams notifications pop up.
Even though it takes time, getting new features is always a positive step. Microsoft is committed to Teams and is constantly working to improve it on all devices.
