Microsoft Teams on Macs will soon offer improved screen sharing. Instead of using Teams’ built-in sharing feature, you’ll be able to use the standard screen sharing tools that come with macOS, making the process smoother and more familiar.
Users familiar with macOS will notice a more refined and consistent user interface, especially when sharing their screen with other apps or directly within macOS. This new design also improves security.
Microsoft explains the benefits of the new feature in a Tech Community post:
Now you can easily share your screen or a specific window during Teams meetings right from your Mac. We’ve used Apple’s built-in sharing features to make the experience smoother, more secure, and easier to use, especially for those new to Teams.
The new sharing feature is helpful, but it has one key drawback: you can’t remotely control another person’s screen or let them control yours when using macOS’s built-in screen sharing within Microsoft Teams.
That functionality is critical to some users, making the new feature a downgrade.
Microsoft says this feature is optional, meaning you can keep using things as they are if you like. It’s turned off automatically, so you’ll need to enable it if you want to try the new version.
The updated screen sharing feature is more seamless and secure, which some people will appreciate. However, others may still prefer the way it works now.
This feature is being tested with users in the Teams Public Preview program and those in the Microsoft 365 Targeted release group. If the testing is successful, it will be made available to all users in the future.
Microsoft shared more details about this at their Ignite 2025 conference. According to the Microsoft 365 Message Center (available here), the feature is expected to launch in January 2026.
To join the Teams Insider program, follow the instructions on Microsoft’s website. Setting up Microsoft 365 Targeted release involves a separate process, also detailed by Microsoft.
If you’re part of the Teams preview program, you can turn on the new and improved screen sharing feature in the app’s settings.
- Click Settings and more within Teams.
- Click Settings.
- Select General.
- Within the Screen sharing section, toggle to enable “Use macOS content sharing.”
After updating, you won’t need to restart Microsoft Teams. While in a meeting, you can easily share your screen using the standard macOS sharing features.
