As of 2025, competition between web browsers continues, with Microsoft and Google still leading the charge. Currently, Microsoft is attempting to gain ground on Google’s popular Chrome browser by promoting its own Edge browser when people search for Chrome on Bing.
Windows Latest recently noticed that Microsoft is showing an ad on Bing that directly compares its Edge browser to Google Chrome. This ad appears when people search for Chrome with the goal of downloading it.
The screenshot shows Microsoft advertising its Edge browser as the best choice, emphasizing features like a free VPN, AI-powered customization, and the ability to earn rewards as reasons to switch.

The report also noted that the ad in Edge showed up when the user was logged into their Microsoft account, had a current Microsoft 365 subscription, and was using the latest version of Windows 11 (24H2).
I tried to see if the issue was specific to my computer by testing on a different MacBook Pro with an M4 chip. Unfortunately, the results weren’t much different. I only saw the standard Microsoft Edge promotional message, which says, “Microsoft Edge is powered by the same open-source technology as Google Chrome, providing best-in-class web and extension compatibility.”
Windows Latest discovered that when users search for Chrome, Bing shows a message promoting Microsoft Edge. The message emphasizes that Edge is built on the same technology as Chrome but offers the added security and reliability of Microsoft. A banner specifically states, “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft.”
The results clearly show Microsoft Edge performing better than Google Chrome in this comparison. Edge meets all the stated requirements, while Chrome doesn’t. Plus, Microsoft officially recommends Edge as the best browser for Windows 11.
Interestingly, Microsoft subtly promoted its Edge browser by displaying its logo in color while presenting the Google Chrome logo in grayscale.
Microsoft seems to be trying to attract users to its Edge browser by making it easier to access popular sites like YouTube, Facebook, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Netflix. Since many people download browsers specifically to use these services, Microsoft is hoping offering quick links to them will encourage users to choose Edge instead of Chrome.
Microsoft has faced similar challenges in the past when competing in the browser market. They’ve been criticized for using unfair methods and problematic designs to try and beat out rivals in search and browsing. Interestingly, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently shared that Google actually earns more revenue from Windows than Microsoft does overall, thanks to Google’s strong position in search.
