A new Conan the Barbarian movie is potentially in the works at 20th Century Studios after years of being stalled. Deadline reports that Christopher McQuarrie is set to write and direct King Conan, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to reprise his role as Conan. The project is currently in its initial phases, and the studio hasn’t officially confirmed the news.
Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the news while at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, last weekend. Although official information is still limited, the YouTube channel Midnight’s Edge has some exclusive details about a possible new King Conan movie.

Midnight’s Edge Exclusive
Based on what the actor has said, it’s still unknown if the upcoming King Conan movie will be based on one of the original stories by Conan author Robert E. Howard.
At the event, Schwarzenegger explained the plot of King Conan to fans. He said the story follows Conan after forty years as king, when he’s overthrown and forced into conflict. The film will feature action, violence, magic, and various creatures as he fights to reclaim his throne.

According to Andre at Midnight’s Edge, Arnold Schwarzenegger may have spoken too soon about a new Conan project. His sources indicate that previous attempts to make another Conan sequel have been put on hold. This information comes from Fredrik Malmberg, who manages the Conan intellectual property for Heroic Signatures and represents the estate of Robert E. Howard, Conan’s creator.
To really appreciate a new Conan film, it’s helpful to look back at how the series has evolved over time.
Locked in the Vault
Oliver Stone, who wrote the screenplay for the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, originally planned a 12-film series. Director John Milius, after revising the initial script, envisioned a trilogy, with each film exploring a different theme. However, Milius didn’t return for the sequel, Conan the Destroyer, and Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t keen on making a third installment. For the last four decades, numerous scripts have been developed and proposed, but never produced.

A frequently talked-about sequel, Legend of Conan, was once in development at Universal Pictures, based on the novel Legend by David Gemmell. Sources say the scripts for that project are now shelved at the studio. Another potential sequel, King Conan: Crown of Iron, also failed to move forward at Warner Bros.
According to an exclusive report from Midnight’s Edge, the potential King Conan movie is based on a new idea from Christopher McQuarrie. Fox was impressed with the pitch and began developing it further just last summer.
Breaking the Conan Curse
According to Schwarzenegger, Amdre suggests McQuarrie’s movie might have some surface-level resemblances to Robert E. Howard’s story, Hour of the Dragon. But it’s important to note this is just speculation and isn’t based on any inside information from Heroic Signatures.
It’s still uncertain if King Conan will ever get made, but Arnold Schwarzenegger working with 20th Century Studios again could give the project a better chance. Schwarzenegger also mentioned he’s interested in making a sequel to Commando and another Predator movie.
If these projects are approved, Conan could finally return to the movies, potentially kicking off a resurgence of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most famous characters.
