Mike Flanagan Shares Update On The Dark Tower TV Series Adaptation

Mike Flanagan recently shared news about his plans to adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. A previous attempt was made with a 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, who had received Oscar nominations for his work. However, the movie wasn’t a success with audiences.

The movie did well in theaters, earning $113.2 million with a production cost of $66 million. Despite this, critics strongly disliked it, and a follow-up movie never happened. However, in December 2022, the creator of The Haunting of Hill House announced they had obtained the rights to create a Dark Tower TV series, envisioning it as a multi-season project.

At Motor City Comic Con, Mike Flanagan and Kate Siegel spoke with ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier and Grant Hermanns and gave a quick update on their plans for The Dark Tower. Flanagan said the project is making consistent progress, and Stephen King often checks in to see how it’s going.

Mike Flanagan says the upcoming series will be a lengthy project, but he’s happy with how the scripts are developing. The creator of shows like Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher confirmed the story will begin at the very start of the first book, with a chase scene in a desolate world – a beginning he particularly enjoys. He also explained that some of the delays are due to the challenges of obtaining the rights to use all the necessary characters.

Mike Flanagan is creating a new TV series based on Stephen King’s classic story, Carrie, for Prime Video. The show will combine the drama of high school life with scary, supernatural elements. It stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie, along with Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Joel Oulette, Matthew Lillard, and Samantha Sloyan. Flanagan is using a combination of actors he’s worked with before and some new faces for this adaptation.

Those familiar with Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series know it’s been a long and difficult journey to adapt the novels for television, with one previous attempt falling through. The first book came out in 1982 and follows Roland Deschain, the last of a knightly order known as gunslingers. He’s been relentlessly pursuing the mysterious Man in Black for years in a story that uniquely combines elements of Westerns, fantasy, science fiction, and horror. The series consists of eight novels in total.
