Mike Flanagan’s Reboot Of Iconic 53-Year-Old Horror Franchise Officially Begins Filming

Filming has officially begun on Mike Flanagan’s reboot of The Exorcist.

Mike Flanagan’s new take on The Exorcist—described as fresh and bold—boasts a strong cast including Scarlett Johansson, Jacobi Jupe (known for Hamnet), Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carl Lumbly, Sasha Calle, Samantha Sloyan, Benjamin Pajak, Kate Siegel, Gil Bellows, John Gallagher Jr., Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, and Carla Gugino. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on March 12, 2027, distributed by Universal.

Mike Flanagan has announced that filming for the new Exorcist movie has begun in New York City. He shared a photo of the film slate on Instagram with the caption “Day 1… here we go. #theexorcist.” The slate also shows Michael Fimognari as the cinematographer; he’s previously collaborated with Flanagan on Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. Several of Flanagan’s past actors, including Katee Sackhoff and Siena Agudong (who both star in the upcoming Carrie miniseries on Prime Video), shared their excitement in the comments. Mike Flanagan is directing and writing the screenplay for the next Exorcist film, and he’s also an executive producer. Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions are also producing. While The Exorcist: Martyrs is a possible title, it hasn’t been officially confirmed. Details about the story and characters are still under wraps, but it will be a completely new tale. This film will be the seventh installment in The Exorcist franchise and the first one released since The Exorcist: Believer came out in 2023.

Filming for The Exorcist is beginning shortly after production finished on the new version of Carrie in October 2025. Both projects feature actors Agudong and Sackhoff; Agudong plays Sue Snell in the eight-episode Carrie miniseries, while Sackhoff’s role is currently undisclosed. Sloyan appears in both productions, portraying Margaret White, Carrie White’s mother (played by Summer H. Howell), in Carrie. Actress Siegel is also involved in both The Exorcist and Carrie, but her specific roles haven’t been revealed.

Mike Flanagan’s work on The Exorcist represents a brief shift away from his frequent adaptations of Stephen King’s novels. He’s currently developing a Dark Tower television series for Prime Video, along with a new adaptation of The Mist. He previously directed Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck. Having established himself as a major force in horror, thanks to his many successful shows on Netflix, Flanagan’s reimagining of The Exorcist is highly anticipated.
