Miley Cyrus Details Dedicating Song to Dad Billy Ray Cyrus After Feud

Miley Cyrus will always adore her dad.

Okay, so things are AMAZING with Miley and Billy Ray again, which is just… everything! And get this – she was telling me about writing “Secrets” for her dad! Can you believe it?! She actually co-wrote it with Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac! Like, seriously, Fleetwood Mac! It’s a total full-circle moment and honestly, I’m living for it. It’s the most beautiful song and knowing they were involved just makes it even more special. I’ve listened to it like a million times already!

Miley recently told Will Marfuggi of TopMob News that songs have a lasting impact beyond our lifetimes. She was speaking at the Hollywood premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash and explained that creating music for someone you care about is a way to contribute to their lasting memory by connecting a song to them.

She added that he was truly honored, and it’s wonderful to know you’ve had a positive impact on others.

It felt incredibly meaningful to write something special for Billy Ray, especially considering his large family. He shares five children – Miley, Brandi (37), Trace (35), Braison (31), and Noah (24) – with his ex-wife, Tish Cyrus, and another son, Christopher (32), with his former partner, Kristin Luckey. It felt like everything had come full circle.

Miley shared that it’s been amazing to watch these songs evolve – from when she was a little girl playing them on her guitar, to now being able to release them for everyone to hear.

The 33-year-old had previously shared that the heartfelt song, released in September, was written as a declaration of love for the singer of “Achy Breaky Heart” after a short period of being distant from each other.

She explained on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast that, despite knowing it would reveal difficult family secrets, she wanted to be the person he trusted enough to confide in, even if those truths were hurtful.

She explained she hoped he’d see her as mature enough to handle difficult conversations, especially being the middle child. She’d always strived to be the family member everyone could come to for support, a calming presence where they could feel safe and share anything.

The public learned about the conflict within the Cyrus family earlier this year, but Miley Cyrus revealed the issues actually started before her mother, Tish, divorced Billy Ray in 2022.

Miley revealed that she and her father, Billy Ray, went through a period where they stopped talking to each other, especially around the time of their divorce after 27 years of marriage. She explained that she felt very close to her mother during that difficult time and observed how problems can escalate if they aren’t addressed promptly.

She explained that problems tend to build up over time, and suddenly you realize years have passed and you’re facing a huge issue you don’t even know where to begin with. She compared it to collecting too much emotional baggage.

Ultimately, Miley came in like a wrecking ball to start mending their strained relationship.

I immediately address the issue head-on, saying something like, ‘Let’s acknowledge this and focus on enjoying each other’s company.’ I believe it’s best to build a positive connection first. Once we’re both feeling good and finding joy, we’ll be in a much better position to have difficult conversations. I prefer to establish that balance before tackling anything challenging.

It looks like Miley and her family are doing much better now. She says she spent the past year working on improving their communication.

Billy Ray Cyrus married Tish Cyrus (née Leticia Finley) on Dec. 28, 2003.

Before Miley was born on November 23, 1992, Billy Ray Cyrus’s former partner, Kristin Luckey, had a son named Christopher Cody Cyrus on April 8th.

When Billy Ray Cyrus married Tish, he became the stepfather to her two children, Brandi Cyrus (born May 26, 1987) and Trace Cyrus (born February 24, 1989). Their biological father is Tish’s former husband, Baxter Helson.

Tish and Billy Ray’s youngest, daughter Noah Cyrus, was born Jan. 8, 2000.

Tish filed for divorce fo a third time in April 2022, and this time it stuck.

She filed for divorce, stating that she and her husband, who she’d been married to for nearly 30 years, had been living separately since February 2020.

After 30 years together, five children, and many cherished memories, Tish and Billy Ray have announced they are separating. In a statement to People magazine, they emphasized that the decision was made with love and not sadness. They’ve grown up together and built a family they’re incredibly proud of, and now they’re ready to pursue individual paths.

The former couple emphasized that their decision to separate wasn’t made easily or hastily. They shared that they’ll always remain a family and hope to continue sharing a loving relationship as friends and co-parents.

Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose, who is 27 years his junior, became engaged in August 2022, but they didn’t announce it publicly until November of that year.

Firerose told People magazine that music was her biggest passion growing up in Australia. She added that she’s been a fan of his music for as long as she can remember.

What started as a friendship turned into more during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Billy Ray told People magazine in November that his family was supportive of his engagement and didn’t hold any resentment about it.

Trace shared a heartfelt message to his father on Instagram on January 22, 2025. He wrote that he’s admired his father for as long as he can remember, always wanting to be just like him. He described the day he was adopted as the happiest of his life, but sadly feels distant from the man he once looked up to.

He said he and his sisters had been concerned about him for a long time, but he’d always kept them at a distance.

Noah was especially hurt, according to Trace.

He wrote that Noah has always wished you were in her life, but you haven’t been there for her. He emphasized that she’s your daughter and deserves better. Despite everything, she still looks up to you, just like he does. They’re all holding onto good memories and hoping you’ll be the person they remember again.

He said he was praying for his whole family – for Miley, Brandi, Noah, all his kids, and even their mom! It was just… everything. I’m seriously sending all the good vibes their way. He’s such a family man, it’s amazing.

In March 2025, Billy Ray appeared to be reconnecting with his daughters, Miley and Noah, publicly praising their recent musical achievements.

He shared on Instagram how incredibly proud he was of the two performers, saying they had truly elevated their craft. He admitted he was so moved by their achievement that he was actually tearing up while writing the post, and jokingly added that he was glad his followers couldn’t see him.

In May 2025, Billy Ray Cyrus posted a photo on Instagram with his daughter Miley, her boyfriend Maxx Morando, and his son Braison Cyrus. The picture seems to have been taken at Billy Ray’s farm in Tennessee, and he wished Braison a happy birthday in the caption.

A day after the rumors surfaced about a family disagreement, Miley addressed the situation on Instagram, acknowledging that she and her father have faced difficulties in the past.
