Despite Build a Rocket Boy’s MindsEye not achieving the critical or financial acclaim that IO Interactive anticipated, they recognized the title’s latent potential. In an interview with IGN, CEO Hakan Abrak from IO Interactive discussed this possibility and their intention to back Build a Rocket Boy due to the studio’s apparent creative brilliance and captivating backdrop.
Abrak mentioned that our initial discussions with them were aimed at assisting them,” he said. “We believed their ideas were impressive and the world they were creating was fascinating, and we hoped they’d have the chance to reveal more of it in the future. Our goal was simply to aid them in distributing their game.
Despite an initially rocky launch for MindsEye, even Abrak admitted that the response was harsh. However, the CEO emphasized that the studio has been putting in a lot of effort to improve the third-person action game and rebuild gamer trust. Ultimately, Abrak expressed optimism about MindsEye’s potential and its development team.
Abrak remarked, “Indeed, it was quite challenging, wasn’t it?” He continued, “The reception wasn’t as expected, not only for them but also for us at IOI Partners. However, they’re putting forth their best efforts to win back the trust of the gaming community. They possess a wealth of ideas and content that they are working on. Here’s hoping they will achieve success with these initiatives in the time to come.
The video game titled “MindsEye” debuted on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in June, but was quickly criticized due to subpar performance across all platforms. Since its launch, developer Build a Rocket Boy has been consistently releasing updates to address some of the game‘s major problems. A June hotfix aimed to resolve memory leak issues and make one of “MindsEye”‘s mini-games less challenging.
Upon launching MindsEye, Rocket Boy expressed regret and disappointment, stating that they were deeply saddened as players weren’t able to enjoy the game as intended. Furthermore, they mentioned their dedication to addressing and resolving the game’s performance problems through updates.
The studio laments that not all players got to play the game as we originally planned. Our main focus is ensuring optimal performance and stability for everyone, regardless of their device, so each player can have a consistently top-notch gaming experience.
After that, it’s been said that the studio has faced layoffs impacting over 100 of its staff members. This news surfaced following a 45-day consultation period initiated by Build a Rocket Boy, a necessity under UK law when a company plans to terminate over 100 jobs in the subsequent 90 days. The studio’s leader, Leslie Benzies, also reportedly hinted at possible layoffs of approximately 300 employees in an internal email, allegedly accusing “saboteurs” from within and outside the company for the potential job cuts.
For now, the scheduled partnership between “Hitman” and “MindsEye” has been postponed until a later time.
