Mindy Kaling Shares Rare Photos of 2-Year-Old Daughter Anne

Never has Mindy Kaling ever been prouder.

The actress, known for her role in The Office, celebrated her youngest daughter Anne’s second birthday on February 24th. She shared photos of Anne with her older siblings, 8-year-old Katherine, nicknamed Kit, and 5-year-old Spencer.

One photo captured the birthday girl’s joyful surprise as she received a mountain of gifts, complete with an Elmo balloon. Another showed her and her siblings happily playing with toys from Sesame Street.

Mindy showcased Anne’s vibrant personal style by sharing photos of her outfits over the years, and also a sweet picture of her child with her, seemingly during a clothing fitting.

The 46-year-old shared on Instagram how much she adores her daughter, Annie. She described Annie as the best part of everything – like the perfect finishing touch, a delightful surprise, and the final piece that made their family feel whole.

Oh my gosh, you guys, you HAVE to know more about Anne! Everyone calls her Tiny Jones or Little Ponyo, it’s the cutest! She’s always singing, and honestly, she plans her outfits before she even wakes up – so meticulous! And get this, she actually kisses the pages of her books! It’s just… magical. But the best part? She genuinely thinks Elmo is one of the family! I mean, seriously, how adorable is that?!

Mindy Kaling considers B.J. Novak like family – he’s even a godparent to her children! She’s joked that he’s become so close to her family that she sometimes forgets they originally met as colleagues on The Office.

Despite their relationship ending in the early 2000s, Mindy and B.J. Novak, 46, are still good friends. Mindy, the creator of Never Have I Ever, says she’s unbothered by the constant speculation that B.J., known for Inglourious Basterds, is the father of her children.

Mindy shared with Marie Claire in 2022 that she and the father of her children have a wonderful connection, and that rumors about his identity haven’t bothered her, her children, or B.J. at all.

She added, “If that’s what is going to be titillating to people, I’ll take it.”

In her book, Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes), Mindy Kaling describes the moment she realized she would be a single mother. It happened after she organized a Mundan—a Hindu ceremony where a baby’s head is shaved to remove negativity from a past life—for her daughter, Katherine “Kit” Kaling.

Oh gosh, I just… I completely broke down. It hit me so hard that my little girl will never meet her grandma, my best friend, the woman I leaned on for everything. And then it really sunk in – I was going to do this whole motherhood thing alone, without Mom by my side. It was terrifying, honestly. Just the thought of raising her all on my own… it was overwhelming.

The actress shared that she finds strength in the Hindu traditions she grew up with. She explained that she plans to raise her daughter with a similar upbringing to feel connected to others who share her heritage and experiences, even those living far away. She believes that as long as she and her husband, Kit, maintain this connection to their Hindu roots, they will always have a sense of belonging and won’t feel isolated.

When Mindy found out she was pregnant, she initially believed she could handle raising her child, Kit, by herself, just like her own parents had done with her. She explained that she’d thought, “If my mom could manage everything without even a hint of trouble, why couldn’t I?”

It suddenly occurred to the former Office star that she was missing her mother’s guidance with new motherhood – things like breastfeeding seemed much harder without her advice. Following a friend’s recommendation, she hired a baby nurse, and it turned out to be a fantastic decision – one of the best she’s ever made.

Growing up without a mother was hard, but I was lucky to have Rose in my life. Rose always offered great advice, and I was a good listener. I remember going through some really tough times, and she helped me manage my fears. She stepped in as a mother figure when I really needed one, even though it wasn’t her responsibility.

Mindy loved having Rose in her life so much that when Rose, the baby nurse, asked if she might need help again in the future, Mindy jokingly said she might have another baby just so Rose would come live with them.

The star of The Mindy Project is always upfront about her dating life, or the fact that she’s currently single.

Mindy shared that she only feels aware of being single when others mention it. She described how married moms sometimes jokingly express a wish to be single, seemingly to reassure her that being without a husband isn’t so bad.

Nonetheless, Mindy shared how dating is “complicated” for her.

She paused, thinking, and said it felt incredibly freeing and fortunate. Sometimes she was simply overwhelmed with gratitude to be an independent woman, able to live life on her own terms, and it moved her to tears.

The actress, who used to date her The Office colleague B.J. Novak, also shared that she sometimes wishes she had a husband. She listed moments like being alone at parties, needing help reaching things, hearing about fathers in children’s books, wanting to share dessert, witnessing her child’s accomplishments, and even just thinking about diamond rings as times she feels that desire.

The creator of Never Have I Ever actually enjoys being single and has a lot to be happy about.

Oh my gosh, can you even imagine how amazing it is for her? She doesn’t have to explain every single parenting choice to anyone! She said it saves her SO much time – like, a truly insane amount. She can just make a quick decision, good or bad, and keep going. It’s honestly a dream. I’m so jealous! No more endless debates, just pure, swift action. It’s brilliant!

There are also some perks: she gets to choose her own romantic partners and set her own rules, avoid family drama, always be the driver, have both nightstands all to herself, and control the TV – meaning she can always watch what she wants.

Before her daughter Katherine was born, Mindy joked that she was doing incredibly well with her pregnancy, saying she hadn’t been so productive since her school days.

She successfully lost weight by carefully following the diet her doctor suggested. She jokingly said she used to think she’d rather not eat kale at all, but found herself enjoying it – almost like a health food blogger on social media!

Mindy was equally committed to staying hydrated, jokingly claiming she was ‘the most hydrated pregnant woman ever.’

Honestly, my second trimester was pretty smooth sailing, and the third wasn’t much different. There was one weird patch though – for about five days, I just couldn’t go to the bathroom, which was really worrying! Thankfully, it eventually resolved itself, and everything went back to normal.
