A sequel to the hit 2025 film, Minecraft Movie, is in the works. The first Minecraft Movie was a huge success, earning $424 million in the US and becoming the year’s highest-grossing movie – narrowly beating Lilo & Stitch by a small margin. Globally, it earned $958.2 million, finishing as the fifth highest-grossing film. Now, director Jared Hess, known for films like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is returning with the original cast to create the sequel.
I caught Jason Momoa on Fallon last night, and he was buzzing about the Minecraft sequel. Honestly, what struck me most was his enthusiasm – he said he fell in love with the script! He admitted the first script left him a little confused, but this new one? He was genuinely cracking up while reading it, which, he pointed out, is something he rarely does. It sounds like they’ve really nailed the humor this time around, and Momoa is clearly thrilled to be a part of it.

I was so excited to hear Jason Momoa share some updates about the Minecraft movie! He said they’re starting to film at the end of April. He played Garrett, this really cool video game store owner, who basically finds his true calling when he gets pulled into the Minecraft world. Apparently, he’s coming back for the sequel, and Jack Black is too – he’s still playing Steve! It’s awesome to know the main cast is returning.
What to Expect from A Minecraft Movie 2

Jared Hess has discussed plans for a sequel, and the first movie included a post-credits scene offering a glimpse of what’s to come. That scene featured Alex, a key character from the game Minecraft. For those unfamiliar with the game, Alex is essentially the female equivalent of the main character, Steve, allowing players to choose their character’s gender.
Hess has stated that Steve and Alex will be portrayed as distinct characters in the upcoming A Minecraft Movie 2. Jack Black played Steve in the first film, and Alice May Connolly briefly appeared as Alex in a post-credit scene, though only from behind. Kate McKinnon provided the voice for that brief Alex appearance. It’s currently unknown who will play Alex in the sequel, but the post-credit scene also included another clue about the movie’s future direction.
Alex moved into a house previously owned by Steve and recently went back to retrieve some belongings. He discovered a chest, which some fans think might be an Ender Chest – a special, personal storage container accessible from anywhere in the game. This discovery has sparked excitement, as Ender Chests are often linked to the End, a challenging dimension filled with floating islands and a powerful dragon. According to Hess, the creators are thrilled with the fan reaction. They hinted at this possibility in the credits, and the community is clearly excited about what’s to come.
