Minecraft competitor “Hytale” shows off playable DOOM inside its game engine — should Mojang Studios be concerned, or is this just a harmless alternative?

Hytale officially launches today, January 13, 2026, and pre-sales have been so strong that it’s already earned enough money to cover the costs of two years of development. This makes it a remarkably successful launch, even before players can access the game.

The modding community is quickly growing! Even before the game is officially out, people are already creating and sharing impressive mods, and they’re really testing the limits of what the game engine can handle.

Following a trend of unexpected locations, the popular game Doom is now playable within the game Hytale, joining a list that includes everything from refrigerators to pregnancy tests and PDF files.

A Youtuber named tr7zw has been demonstrating various modifications for the upcoming game Hytale, and incredibly, even got the classic game Doom working within it – all before Hytale is officially released. It’s a really remarkable technical accomplishment.

Hytale is expected to be a very successful game when it releases. Its popularity might encourage Minecraft to speed up its development and release bigger, more frequent updates instead of the smaller ones it currently offers a few times a year.

Minecraft isn’t facing any problems. It’s incredibly popular on many different platforms, unlike Hytale which is starting out only on PC. However, Hytale is definitely aiming to become a game like Minecraft and Roblox – one that thrives on players creating and sharing their own content over the long term.
