Minecraft has changed dramatically since its original release in 2009 – after all, it’s had over 15 years of updates and new features! Mojang Studios recently released a video explaining how the update process itself has evolved over time.
The new video features Jens Bergensten, Mojang’s Chief Creative Officer, and Cory Scheviak, a Creative Lead. It’s a fun, short look at how Mojang is currently designing Minecraft, focusing on new features that create a good balance between challenge and benefit.
Regarding older features that don’t quite fit with the current game, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson mentioned the Creeper, Minecraft’s iconic, explosive enemy. According to the long-time Mojang developer, they probably wouldn’t include the Creeper in Minecraft if they were designing it today – and I agree with that decision.
When bad things happen, you should only have yourself to blame
I won’t go through the whole video – it’s pretty short and worth watching! – but here’s a summary. Minecraft is constantly changing, and the developers at Mojang Studios think carefully about every new addition. They consider how players will use it, its long-term impact on the game, and how it works with everything else.
Minecraft’s challenges and dangers are designed to be player-driven. As Mojang’s Jakob Bergensten explained, difficult situations should feel like a result of the player’s choices – either they knowingly took a risk, or they weren’t adequately prepared. The goal is for players to actively seek out challenges, rather than having them forced upon them.
You decide to face the Ender Dragon and take on the formidable Wither. Perhaps you start massive Pillager Raids or brave the difficult Trial Chambers. You can also defend your base from lightning with a lightning rod, build Iron Golems to fight off monsters, and gear up with strong armor and enchantments – there are endless ways to protect yourself and thrive.
Occasionally, unexpected things happen when new features are added that disrupt the game’s intended balance. For example, Endermen used to be able to grab any block, leading to players’ creations being ruined. Similarly, Iron Golems once attacked Creepers, causing pointless damage. While Mojang fixed these issues with those specific features, the Creeper itself remains a potential problem.
Introducing a monster that simply destroys everything players have created would be incredibly divisive and likely cause a lot of upset.
Jens Bergensten, Chief Creative Officer at Mojang Studios
According to Markus ‘Notch’ Persson in a recent video, if current development rules had been in place from the start, the Creeper likely wouldn’t exist. Though the Creeper is arguably Minecraft’s most famous creature, players have a complicated relationship with it, as it’s famous for destroying their creations.
As Bergensten pointed out, introducing a destructive enemy like the Creeper today would likely cause a huge backlash from Minecraft players. While the Creeper is now a beloved part of the game, adding such a feature now would be very controversial, and players would probably be very upset.
It’s understandable why the Minecraft team feels this way. Minecraft aims to be enjoyable for all players, and allowing unlimited destruction would only appeal to those already looking for a difficult experience.
The Creeper isn’t going anywhere, and it’s staying the same. This just shows how carefully Mojang needs to update Minecraft, the best-selling video game ever. That’s because so many different kinds of players – young and old, skilled and new – all love playing it.
As a researcher, I recently had the chance to interview Jens Bergensten, and we discussed a potential ‘Minecraft Movie.’ Excitingly, Mojang has now officially teased a second Minecraft movie and announced when we can expect it to be released!
