Minecraft Movie 2 teased with a 2027 release date — here’s what we know

The movie ‘Minecraft’ came out earlier this year and, even though opinions were divided, it’s become one of the biggest movie hits of 2025. The film is a bright and cheerful live-action adventure, featuring popular actors like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and has received a lot of positive attention.

Good news for Minecraft fans! Mojang Studios has announced a sequel, and it’s coming sooner than many expected. They shared a photo on social media today featuring realistic-looking pickaxes and revealed the release date: July 23, 2027. It looks like we’ll be able to see it in theaters then!

While nothing is official – we haven’t seen a trailer or even learned the movie’s title – this announcement makes it clear: a Minecraft movie sequel is happening. It’s expected to be in theaters a little over two years after the first film, as long as there are no unexpected changes or delays.

Endless possibilities for the next Minecraft adventure

It’s currently unclear if any of the original actors – like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, or Danielle Brooks – will be back for the sequel. We also don’t know if the second Minecraft movie will continue the story from the first one. Since it’s simply *a* Minecraft movie, the filmmakers have a lot of freedom to go in any direction they choose.

I recently spoke with people involved in making ‘A Minecraft Movie’ just after it became available on streaming platforms. Here’s a quote from Jens Bergensten, the creative leader at Mojang Studios, that really captures how they feel about it:

With Minecraft, players make their own adventures, and we wanted the movie to feel the same way. We’re not telling a story *about* the character Steve—this is just one version of him, and a possible origin point for the world of Minecraft.

I’m really looking forward to this! My daughter and I both loved seeing the first Minecraft movie in theaters, and we’ll definitely be going to see this one as well.

Announcing the sequel so early without a trailer or any details is a bit unusual, but it’s consistent with how Warner Bros. promoted the first film. We can probably expect the first real trailers to appear around late 2026 or early 2027.

The next Minecraft movie is coming to theaters on July 23, 2027, though its story and title are still unknown.
