Minecraft’s latest test lets you play with spears, zombie mounts, and more starting today

Minecraft will get one final update this year, and players can now try out some of its new features in early testing. It’s been a while since the ‘Mounts of Mayhem’ update was revealed, and now you can get a good look at what it has to offer.

The new mounts revealed during Minecraft Live (September 2025) are now available in the newest snapshot of Minecraft: Java Edition. Mojang Studios has announced that players on Minecraft: Bedrock Edition will also be able to enjoy them in a preview soon.

One exciting detail from the recent Minecraft Live (September 2025) announcements wasn’t revealed right away, and it makes the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update even better. Here’s the information you should have.

The first Mounts of Mayhem features… and one big surprise

The Mounts of Mayhem update is the fourth major content release for our survival-crafting game this year. As you might guess from the name, it focuses on letting you ride various creatures, and includes some additional features as well.

This initial release includes everything we’ve previously shown for the update, including the new spear. The spear is a completely new melee weapon, alongside swords and axes, giving you another combat option. It’s great for keeping enemies at a distance with quick thrusts, and you can even charge it up for extra damage – the faster you run, the more it hurts! Plus, the spear has a unique enchantment called ‘Lunge’ that lets you dash forward.

This weapon is perfect for fighting while riding any mount – horses, camels, or anything else you can control. That now includes the nautilus, a new creature in Minecraft’s Mounts of Mayhem update that you can tame and ride. As an underwater creature, the nautilus can even freeze your oxygen meter, protecting you from drowning.

I didn’t expect to be able to tame zombie mounts in Minecraft, but I love that we’ll be able to.

Mojang revealed new zombie enemies – zombie nautiluses and zombie horses – which will now appear in the survival game mode. Originally, they had planned for drowned and zombies with spears to be able to ride these creatures, making them hostile mounts.

This first look also reveals you can tame zombie mounts! You’ll need to defeat the riders first, but then you can care for a group of undead horses or even befriend a decaying octopus. I really like this new feature, and I hope it stays in the game – Mojang’s announcement makes it sound like it’s still being considered.

We expect the Mounts of Mayhem update to gain even more features and improvements before its release on all platforms this holiday season. Java Edition players can try out the initial features now, and Bedrock players won’t have to wait much longer!

Just in case you haven’t heard, Mojang has given us a sneak peek at the second Minecraft movie, and we now know when it will be released!
