Mini Review: Ball X Pit (PS5) – A Fiendishly Compelling Mix of Vampire Survivors and Breakout

Ball X Pit is a surprisingly addictive game. You might plan to play for just half an hour, but you’ll easily lose track of time! It’s a fast-paced, arcade-style game that blends elements of Vampire Survivors and Breakout, with a bit of bullet-hell chaos thrown in, making it really hard to stop playing. It’s a roguelite, so each playthrough is unique.

This game is played in two parts. You choose a character and go down into an arena to find treasure, fighting off waves of enemies using different types of balls.

After each run – which typically takes around 15 minutes – you’ll leave the pit and start leading the rebuilding of New Ballbylon, a town that was completely destroyed.

You can fire balls either by tapping or letting the game do it for you. Most of the gameplay involves aiming and launching balls at enemies that look like blocks – each bounce deals damage. You quickly level up during each playthrough, earning experience points to unlock special balls and helpful upgrades that make you more powerful.

As a huge fan, one of the coolest things about this game is definitely the fusion and evolution system. You can combine two special balls to create something even stronger, and there are *so* many different combinations to find – it’s seriously addictive!

The game is really rewarding, and there’s a ton of variety thanks to all the different characters and ways to play, each with their own special skills. Sometimes the action gets a bit overwhelming and hard to follow, but that didn’t happen often.

The core of the game’s progress comes from building and expanding your town. You’ll gather resources to construct new buildings, and each one provides a benefit. While things start slowly, your progress speeds up as you unlock and improve characters and buildings. These upgrades build on each other, eventually making you incredibly powerful.

In Ball X Pit, everything is connected. The gold you collect during each run is used to improve your base, and those improvements help you perform even better on your next run, creating a continuous cycle of progress.

The game is designed to be incredibly addictive, constantly giving you reasons to jump back in for another round. Because each playthrough is relatively short, it’s easy to convince yourself to play “just one more” time. If you enjoy roguelites or fast-paced arcade games, this one is a must-try.
