Mini Review: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake (PS5) – A Comforting Couple of Classic JRPGs

The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake brings together two beloved classic Japanese role-playing games. While they connect to the recently remade Dragon Quest III (released in 2024), these games actually take place later in the timeline. Together, these three games form the ‘Erdrick trilogy’ and maintain the series’ reputation for excellent quality, featuring familiar and satisfying turn-based combat that feels both classic and comforting.

These games, originally released in 1986 and 1987, are simple and fun to play, but now look amazing thanks to a beautiful updated visual style. All the cutscenes have been redone, and the characters and monsters have been completely redesigned.

We’ve added new story content and several difficulty levels, so players can adjust the challenge to their liking. The game also features a fresh, updated soundtrack and, for the first time, voice acting in both English and Japanese.

Okay, so Dragon Quest I is definitely a unique game! It’s pretty short, and honestly, it’s not what I expected from an RPG. You don’t control a whole party, just one hero, which feels a little different. It’s a pretty quick adventure, maybe around 15 hours, where you’re facing off against the Dragonlord all by yourself. It’s interesting, though – a bit of a classic in its own way!

This update lets you fight several enemies simultaneously, bringing it in line with other games in the series. To keep things fair, we’ve also included attacks that can target multiple foes.

Dragon Quest II is the heart of this classic RPG experience. It’s a much larger adventure than the first game, featuring a new character, more events, locations, and items – including hidden secrets. Players can expect around 40 hours of gameplay, and even more if they aim to discover everything the game has to offer.

Dragon Quest II is an epic adventure where the descendants of the hero Erdrick team up to fight a world-ending evil, and it’s a fantastic game on its own merits.

However, unlike games like Dragon Quest XI, this remake likely won’t win over players who aren’t already fans of the classic Dragon Quest series. It sticks closely to traditional JRPG formulas, and while it’s been updated with some modern features, you’ll really need to enjoy old-school gaming to fully appreciate Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.
