Mini Review: Hello Kitty Island Adventure (PS5) – Purrfectly Cosy, Slightly Clawed

At long last, you can now enjoy Hello Kitty Island Adventure on your PlayStation 5! This delightful game, possibly named after South Park more than a decade prior, first debuted on Apple Arcade back in 2023. Subsequently, it was launched for PC and Nintendo Switch in January of the following year.

Blending elements of cozy life simulations and adventure games, players assist Hello Kitty in revitalizing a once-glorious amusement park on the island, forming friendships along the way with the island’s charming residents.

Initially, you’ll have the opportunity to create your very own Sanrio-inspired character. You can select from various animal species, body structures, and color palettes to design a one-of-a-kind character that seems right at home in the charming universe of Hello Kitty.

Upon reaching the island, various characters present you with numerous tasks, and it won’t take long before you begin amassing a variety of collectible items.

Initially, the presence of a quest log and objective markers can make the game feel cluttered, as numerous tasks vie for your focus. Additionally, you may find yourself acquiring items that, at first, don’t have a clear purpose in the game.

In this game, the vastness of the world becomes apparent after completing a few initial main missions, allowing for extensive exploration. The graphics are vibrant, colorful, and softly rendered, fitting perfectly with the game’s identity. Navigating through the map is entertaining as you can leap, scale walls, and even swim in many areas. Additionally, there are labyrinthine “dungeons” to delve into, complete with Zelda-inspired riddles to unlock doors.

In this game, you’ll find familiar activities like crafting, fishing, insect gathering, and cooking, all wrapped up together. Additionally, you’ll need to foster friendships with the island residents by presenting them with gifts. These interactions open up new quests and materials for crafting even better gifts. However, keep in mind that you can only give a certain number of gifts to each character per day, so reaching the highest friendship levels requires patience and persistent gift-giving.

While you’re free to personalize the interior of your house and guest cabins with themed décor, the outdoor environment of the island appears to be fixed, which gives an impression that it’s not yours. The primary focus on exploration and gathering collectibles instead of home decoration sets it apart from Animal Crossing.

In essence, Hello Kitty Island Adventure is highly recommended for Sanrio enthusiasts, given its excellent portrayal of the original content. Moreover, it offers ample entertainment for casual gamers as well. Although it has some shortcomings, it remains a worthwhile addition to any gamer’s collection of relaxing games.
