The Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection is Capcom’s latest remaster, shining a spotlight on a period of the Mega Man series that hasn’t gotten much attention recently.
This collection brings together three Mega Man Star Force RPGs originally released on the Nintendo DS: Mega Man Star Force, Mega Man Star Force 2, and Mega Man Star Force 3 (which is newly available in some regions). It includes every version of each game, giving you a total of seven titles to play.
Star Force centers around Geo Stellar, a boy who joins forces with an alien named Omega-Xis to defend Earth from dangers across the galaxy. While the first game sometimes feels slow, the overall story is engaging and filled with enjoyable characters.
The Star Force games follow up the Mega Man Battle Network series, keeping the same style of gameplay. Players still fight on a grid and use cards to perform powerful attacks.
The battles can be fun and offer a fresh take on traditional turn-based combat. However, the fighting stays largely the same throughout all three games, leading to a repetitive experience that doesn’t really change as you play through them.
The game also doesn’t clearly show you where to go next, which leads to a lot of aimless wandering until you stumble upon what you need to do. Combined with the slow pace, it can take a long time before you actually make meaningful progress.
It’s great that there are different versions of each game in the trilogy, but the core content is largely the same across them all. Take Mega Man Star Force, for example – it comes in Leo, Pegasus, and Dragon versions, and the biggest difference between them is the special transformations Geo unlocks as you play.
This game keeps the online features from previous versions, letting you connect with other players. By doing so, you can unlock content from different versions of the game, similar to how Pokémon works. This means you won’t have to start a new adventure from scratch just to experience everything the game has to offer.
Overall, the game looks fantastic, and Capcom continues to do a great job of respecting its classic titles. There’s plenty to explore, including a gallery of content, customizable settings, and online features. Because the original game was on the Nintendo DS – which had two screens – you can also adjust the difficulty and how the game appears to best suit your preferences.
Okay, so the gameplay in the Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection definitely shows its age a bit, but honestly, if you were a fan of the Battle Network games, or you’re just looking for a cool new RPG series to get into, it’s totally worth checking out. I’m glad I gave it a shot!
