Mini Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind (PS5) – A Short But Sweet Nostalgia Trip

As a 90’s kid who grew up with the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, I must say that Rita’s Rewind has brought back some serious nostalgia! The gameplay is reminiscent of those arcade beat-’em-ups we used to play in our local video store.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is pretty much spot on! It’s an action-packed beat-’em-up that instantly triggers nostalgia from the good old days of the show. There are a few minor hiccups here and there, but overall, it serves up a heap of fun!

In the game, you can choose to play as any of the original Power Rangers (and the Green Ranger after finishing the story once). You and four companions are tasked with safeguarding Angel Grove when the evil Rita Repulsa joins forces with her future self. The ensuing adventure is filled with excitement, featuring a mix of stages. In most cases, you’ll be fighting off putty patrollers and other familiar baddies.

The fundamental fighting system is quite straightforward, featuring a basic combo, evasion maneuver, and the usual elements found in beat-’em-up games. It’s enjoyable to unleash attacks on different adversaries, but regrettably, we encountered problems where certain inputs didn’t respond reliably, particularly with dodging. This often led to quite frustrating losses.

In games labeled as Normal and above, a system offering only a limited number of continues implies that once you exhaust them, your play session concludes, without any opportunities to gain additional lives or continues. Coupled with sudden increase in difficulty for one or two bosses, it can feel excessively challenging. Fortunately, the easy setting offers an unlimited supply of continues instead.

Beyond conventional brawling stages and boss battles, this game introduces a fresh twist by incorporating vehicle-based shooter sequences, along with first-person combat scenes when you control the Megazord. This mix of styles keeps the story engaging and exciting. The retro aesthetic, numerous fan references, and lively music contribute to an enjoyable gaming experience overall.

Despite some shortcomings in the combat, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind effectively delivers a blast from the past that diehard fans will relish. It might not be the top action game of late, but its evident affection for the original content, diverse levels, and appealing presentation make it a genuinely enjoyable experience.
