Old School Rally delivers exactly what you’d expect – a classic rally racing experience. It perfectly captures the style of PlayStation 1-era games, blending retro graphics and gameplay with a few updated features for a fun and nostalgic ride.
The game’s graphics deliberately mimic the blocky, polygonal style of the original PlayStation, and when combined with music reminiscent of the late 90s, it successfully evokes the feel of early 3D rally games.
The game has a classic structure: you drive through different rallies with various cars, and earn new vehicles and rewards by winning.
The game doesn’t feature officially licensed stages or cars, but it clearly takes inspiration from real-world motorsport. You’ll find vehicles reminiscent of iconic models like the Subaru Impreza, Audi Sport Quattro, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution – basically, all the classics you’d hope for.
Besides the main Rally mode, which feels like a career experience, the game offers Time Trials with online leaderboards to compete with others, and a Versus mode for racing against the computer or a friend in split-screen.
One of the biggest challenges with the game is its sensitive controls. The default handling feels overly responsive, making it difficult to accurately control braking, turns, and drifting.
We had a much better experience when we reduced the sensitivity of both the steering and brakes. We definitely suggest experimenting with these settings to find what works best for you. After we adjusted the handling, we really enjoyed racing the rallies.
The game has a lot more to offer than just the 32 cars you start with. You can unlock additional Time Trial stages by improving your best times, and you can use the money you earn to buy decorations for your Collection – a special place to showcase the cars you own.
We also appreciate the photo mode – it’s simple to use, and when paired with the game’s overall style, it feels like a unique and welcome feature.
This game is a straightforward, arcade-style rally racer with enjoyable tracks, familiar cars, and a pleasing visual style. While the default controls might feel a bit awkward at first, it’s worth sticking with it – once you adjust the settings, the game is genuinely fun.
