The remastered versions of Patapon and Pataton 2 for PS4 did a decent job reacquainting players with the unique rhythm-based titles from the PSP era, where you command armies of warriors to the beat. However, these remasters had their fair share of issues such as input delay and pixelated textures that somewhat marred the experience initially.
Bandai Namco has taken a mulligan here, correcting the lingering issues from the PS4.
The input delay has vanished, allowing you to modify the timeframe for striking beats as necessary. Moreover, the textures appear sharp and stunningly beautiful – they seem better than they’ve ever been before.
From the main menu, a fresh challenge level has been introduced, intriguingly set at “easy” for both games initially. Nevertheless, the controls demonstrate a quick response, ensuring smooth gameplay devoid of any delay, allowing for an effortless synchronization with the tunes.
Although the titles might seem peculiar at first glance, they offer an abundance of intriguing lore, captivating world-building, and clever color usage. For those newcomers who haven’t encountered these originals before, you’ll find yourselves tapping rhythms using face buttons to lead a squad in a distinctive mix of beat-making and role-playing games.
The original issues persist, such as games feeling repetitive due to the need to frequently revisit locations for resources. This is particularly noticeable in Patapon 2, boasting additional content and diversity, yet demanding repeated visits to maps for resources.
Although it wasn’t entirely surprising, it’s disheartening to find out that there aren’t any changes to enhance the user experience and alleviate some of the redundancy from the initial versions. Regrettably, some of the complex goals still remain unclear as well.
However, while these games keep their core experiences largely unchanged, which could be seen as a positive given the improvements made elsewhere, this compilation presents arguably the best possible way to play Patapon and Patapon 2 today.
