Is there any movie star quite like Tom Cruise? Throughout his long career, he’s consistently proven to be exceptional, and the incredibly popular Mission Impossible series – now nearing its end after nearly 30 years with the release of Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD – has only solidified that reputation.
Ethan Hunt and his IMF team are still working to stop a dangerous artificial intelligence called the Entity, which has hacked into intelligence agencies worldwide. As governments pursue them, and a figure from Ethan’s past reappears, Hunt teams up with new allies. They have a chance to permanently disable the Entity, but they must act quickly to prevent a catastrophic global shift.
Filmed at the same time as *Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning*, both movies faced major production issues when the pandemic shut down Hollywood. This significantly increased costs, especially for the submarine set piece in *Final Reckoning*, which was plagued with technical difficulties. This installment was intended as the franchise’s finale, bringing back characters and plot points from all previous films, starting with the original in 1996, to create a cohesive ending. It largely succeeded, delivering an almost three-hour epic with two standout action sequences: the increasingly tense and claustrophobic submarine scene, and a thrilling biplane chase that was particularly intense on IMAX screens, as Tom Cruise desperately clung to the wings.
The Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD releases are packed with bonus features, including a wealth of extra content like these and much more.

The commentary track featuring director John McTiernan (known as McQ on set) and Tom Cruise is particularly insightful. Both openly discuss the challenges they encountered during production and explain the reasoning behind their creative decisions. Cruise is remarkably involved in every aspect of filmmaking, and considering his extensive experience working with renowned directors like Spielberg, Scorsese, and Kubrick, it’s surprising he hasn’t directed a film himself, especially at 61 years old.
The behind-the-scenes looks at each action sequence are essential viewing, not just for movie buffs, but also for aspiring action directors. Tom Cruise and the director constantly pushed the boundaries of what was possible, even going so far as to have Cruise himself test the physics of a stunt by climbing onto a biplane wing. The documentary also showcases the massive, custom-built set that housed a sunken submarine, which rested on a 1000-ton gimbal – a device so complex that any breakdown would have cost millions and halted production. The footage reveals unexpected challenges too, like the water currents created by the moving set pieces that Cruise had to navigate while swimming amongst falling torpedoes.
Tom Cruise routinely performs incredibly dangerous stunts for his films, and the behind-the-scenes footage is often alarming for insurance companies. One particularly harrowing example from the new film involves a scene where Ethan Hunt’s parachute catches fire. Cruise performed this stunt sixteen times, repeatedly jumping with a flaming parachute to get the perfect shot, and all those takes are documented in the behind-the-scenes material.
The Mission Impossible behind-the-scenes footage offers a compelling look at the challenges of making such a large-scale and risky film. Even the deleted scenes include commentary from the director explaining why certain moments were cut or reshot – for example, a scene of Tom Cruise exiting an elevator was refilmed to create a more dramatic lighting effect.
This new installment is essential for dedicated fans, even if it isn’t the best film in the series (that would be 2018’s ‘Fallout’). It still surpasses many other large-scale action movies, largely thanks to Tom Cruise. Audiences sometimes overlook his dramatic skills, but he delivers a stunning performance as a self-help guru, and he fearlessly performs incredibly dangerous stunts. This dedication to his craft might explain why, after more than four decades, he’s the only actor who has consistently remained a major star throughout his entire career.
