Mistborn Author in Discussions With AAA Developers For Video Game Adaptation

Popular fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson has shared that several major video game companies are interested in turning his Mistborn book series into a game. In his latest yearly blog post, where he updates fans on his projects, Sanderson mentioned he’s currently talking with large, well-known game developers about a Mistborn adaptation.

Brandon Sanderson has long been open to a video game based on his Mistborn series. A project with Little Orbit even started in 2012, but it was ultimately cancelled. He explained that for about six or seven years, the rights to create a game were connected to the rights for a potential Mistborn movie, which complicated things.

Brandon Sanderson recently shared that there’s growing interest in adapting one of his video games, and he believes he’s reached a point where a Mistborn game is possible. He’s begun initial discussions with major game developers, though the project is still in the very early stages. Sanderson explained that the rights to adapt his work were previously connected to film projects for about six or seven years, preventing him from exploring video game options until recently.

This time, I’m working to maintain ownership of my video game rights. I’ve already had positive discussions with several large companies in the gaming industry.

When Brandon Sanderson talks about “Step One,” he’s referring to the first of ten stages he outlines for getting a book adapted into a movie or TV show. These ten stages are broken down into three phases, and Step One specifically focuses on the initial process of pitching the idea. Although these steps are mainly designed for film and TV, they could also be useful when considering adaptations into video games.

The first three books of the Mistborn saga center around Vin, a young woman caught up in an elaborate heist orchestrated by a crew of thieves targeting the powerful and oppressive Lord Ruler. The series is known for its richly developed world and intricate magic system, where different metals grant unique abilities. For instance, consuming tin dramatically enhances the senses, and iron allows manipulation of metal objects. Those who can skillfully use all metals are known as Mistborn, while those limited to a single metal are called Mistings.

Readers often say that Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn, like his Stormlight Archive series, would make a great game. This is because the books feature a detailed magic system that could lead to exciting and unique combat mechanics.

Brandon Sanderson collaborated with the developers of Subnautica on Moonbreaker, a strategy game that launched in Early Access in 2022 and received its full release in 2024. Also in 2024, the publisher Bandai Namco reached out to Sanderson after he shared a video of himself opening a package they sent him for Elden Ring.
