Misty remains one of the most beloved Pokémon characters, even years after leaving the show. She’s considered the original inspiration for many of the female Pokémon trainers seen in the anime. Introduced in the very first episode, Misty joined Ash on his adventures after he accidentally broke her bicycle and promised to pay her back. She traveled with Ash and Brock across the Kanto, Orange Islands, and Johto regions, all while honing her skills as a Water-type Pokémon trainer and eventually becoming the Gym Leader of Cerulean City.
Let’s talk about Misty’s Pokémon. When she first appears in the anime, she already owns three: Staryu, Starmie, and Goldeen. Starmie and Goldeen were at the Cerulean Gym, but she had Staryu with her from the beginning. Over the course of her adventures, Misty catches many more Pokémon, though some were more helpful than others. This list highlights the top 10 Pokémon that Misty used and that contributed to her journey in the anime, considering each one’s unique strengths and weaknesses.
10) Goldeen
Goldeen was one of Misty’s first Pokémon in the anime, but it’s often considered her weakest. This is because Goldeen can only effectively battle in water, making it unhelpful in many situations. Because of this limitation, Misty doesn’t often get to use Goldeen during her adventures.
Goldeen wasn’t a particularly strong Pokémon, mainly known for causing trouble for Team Rocket and providing some humor. It often appeared when the characters needed to travel across water. Ultimately, Misty realized Goldeen would be happier at the Cerulean Gym, where it could always be in the water.
9) Azurill
Misty received an Azurill egg from Tracey’s Marill, and it hatched soon after. Although Azurill joined Misty’s team later in the series, it was a popular addition because of how adorable viewers found it whenever it appeared.
I just adore Azurill – it’s such a cute little Pokémon! In the anime, it really plays the part of a baby, which means it doesn’t battle or do anything super impressive. Honestly, most of the time it just *is* a baby Pokémon. There’s one really fun exception though – I remember it teaming up with its mom, Marill, to send Team Rocket blasting off! That was a great moment, but overall, Azurill is just a sweet, playful little thing.
8) Corsola
Misty obtained a Corsola in Season 5 of the anime using a special Lure Ball. She quickly put Corsola to the test in the Whirl Cup, and it became one of her most reliable Pokémon throughout their adventures in the Johto region, consistently winning battles.
Corsola was a dependable Pokémon in battle, even defeating a powerful Gyarados once. Despite being one of Misty’s strongest Pokémon and having a good record, it didn’t achieve any truly remarkable victories. Still, Corsola was a significant member of Misty’s team and remains a fondly remembered Pokémon.
7) Staryu
Staryu was definitely Misty’s most-used Pokémon throughout the anime series. Being one of her original Pokémon, it appeared frequently early on. As Misty caught more Pokémon with a wider range of abilities, Staryu was used less often later in the show. Still, it remained a dependable part of her team and a popular choice among fans.
Staryu, similar to Starmie, is really helpful when you’re in or around water, whether it’s for swimming or helping a group travel. Although it’s a Water-type Pokémon, it struggles against Fire-types and needs to give it its all to compete. Staryu is remembered for its battle against Ash’s Butterfree during Misty’s challenge, but the fight didn’t have a clear winner.
6) Clauncher
Misty’s last Pokémon in the anime was Clauncher, and it was quite a challenge to catch! It was a smart Pokémon that kept escaping, but with Ash’s help and a fishing hook, she finally succeeded. They then had a battle to decide who would keep Clauncher, and Misty won, adding Clauncher to her team.
Clauncher appeared late in the Pokémon series and didn’t have many chances to stand out. Because of this, we didn’t get to see everything it could do. However, it still made a strong impression, particularly when it battled Team Rocket alongside Ash’s Corphish, hinting at how great of a Pokémon it could have been with more screen time.
5) Politoed
Politoed has a unique journey in Misty’s Pokémon team, changing over the course of the anime series. Misty originally caught it as a small and timid Poliwag in the second season. It then evolved into Poliwhirl, which was often shy and would hide behind Misty. By the fifth season, Poliwhirl evolved once more, becoming the happy and self-assured Politoed we know.
It’s wonderful to see Poliwhirl evolve into the confident Politoed! Politoed is a joy to watch, always clapping and clearly excited about everything. The evolution itself is a great moment – it happens right in the middle of a battle against Ash’s Bulbasaur. Even though it loses that battle, Politoed’s development and lovable personality make it one of Misty’s most cherished Pokémon.
4) Psyduck
Psyduck and Misty’s relationship started by chance, but he’s become one of her most reliable Pokémon. Misty was initially annoyed with Psyduck because she didn’t plan on catching him, but they eventually grew close. Despite being a bit clumsy, Psyduck proved to be a strong battler, winning important fights. He has incredible psychic abilities, though they usually only appear when he has a bad headache.
Psyduck is more than just a capable fighter; it’s a hilarious character in the anime. It frequently jumps out of its Poké Ball unexpectedly, much to Misty’s frustration. While it can swim, Psyduck isn’t particularly strong in water battles. Despite its quirks, Psyduck is one of Misty’s most beloved Pokémon thanks to its memorable personality, occasional surprising victories, and consistently funny moments.
3) Starmie
Starmie is a fast swimmer, making it helpful for traveling across water. However, it wasn’t one of Misty’s most powerful Pokémon. This is largely because Starmie didn’t get many opportunities to battle in the anime, and often lost when it did. As a result, Misty tended to use Starmie more for getting around than for fighting.
Starmie and Pidgeotto started a battle once, but Team Rocket interfered, stopping them before they could finish. In a different episode, Starmie’s central gem cracked during a fight with Jessie’s Arbok. Adding to the trouble, Misty often had difficulty getting Starmie to come out of its Poké Ball, and Psyduck would frequently appear instead, forcing her to use a Pokémon she hadn’t intended to.
2) Togetic
Similar to how Pikachu is always with Ash, Togepi is a frequent companion to Misty. Togepi highlights a gentler, more caring side of Misty, as she quickly forms a close bond with it after it hatches. Being a baby Pokémon, Togepi didn’t participate in many battles.
Despite its small size, Togepi continued to surprise everyone throughout the series, often disrupting Team Rocket’s plans with clever uses of Metronome. As it evolved into Togetic, it became a more dependable and powerful Pokémon. While Togetic wasn’t known for its attacking abilities, it excelled at defense.
1) Gyarados
Most Pokémon fans agree that Gyarados is Misty’s most important Pokémon in the anime. It’s memorable not just for its power, but also for the personal story behind it. Misty used to be afraid of Gyarados due to a childhood incident, but conquering that fear was a key part of her taking over the Cerulean City gym. Training Gyarados, therefore, represented her personal growth and overcoming challenges.
Gyarados is one of Misty’s strongest Pokémon, though it doesn’t appear with her at the beginning of her journey-it joins her later on. In the *Pokémon Sun & Moon* series, Gyarados proved its incredible power by Mega Evolving. It had a fierce battle against Ash’s Pikachu in a tournament, but ultimately lost. Gyarados later Mega Evolved once more and successfully defeated Team Rocket, making it a fan-favorite Pokémon even though it wasn’t featured in many episodes.
