Beethoven and Dinosaur, working with publisher Annapurna Interactive, revealed that their new game, Mixtape, will launch on PC (through Steam and the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on May 7th. A new trailer showcasing the game is available below.
The trailer is just under a minute long and centers around three high school friends on a quest for the perfect teenage adventure. It shows them having a series of bizarre experiences, like flying above their town and even skateboarding through a car that’s exploding.
The movie Mixtape follows three friends on one last journey, and is built around songs considered to be iconic for their generation. The story unfolds through these songs, which trigger vivid, dreamlike memories of the friends’ shared experiences.
The game Mixtape was first revealed in June 2024, and its developers, Beethoven and Dinosaur, announced that the soundtrack would feature artists like Iggy Pop, Joy Division, The Smashing Pumpkins, DEVO, Roxy Music, Lush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure.
The first trailer for Mixtape gives viewers a strong sense of the game’s world, filled with nostalgic details like portable CD players and skate-friendly streets. It captures the playful energy of being a teenager, blending everyday activities with fantastical moments – like characters floating above rooftops or creating fireworks with a simple gesture while driving.
The game was initially planned to launch in 2025, but the release date has been delayed to 2026. The studio is keeping details limited, probably to maintain an element of surprise for players.
The studio’s last game, The Artful Escape, came out in 2021. It’s a game for PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, and tells the story of Francis Vendetti as he prepares for his first live show. Haunted by the shadow of his famous, deceased uncle, Francis embarks on a colorful, mind-bending adventure to forge his own unique identity as a performer.
The game offers diverse gameplay experiences and a compelling story, brought to life by a talented voice cast including Michael Johnston, Caroline Kinley, Lena Headey, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Strong, and Carl Weathers.
When we first reviewed The Artful Escape, we gave it an 8/10. We loved its beautiful visuals, compelling story, fantastic music and voice acting, and enjoyable gameplay. However, we did note some performance problems and felt the platforming could have been more complex.
