Moana’s Live-Action Maui Design Explained After Wig Backlash

Following the huge success of last year’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, Disney is aiming for similar results with the upcoming live-action Moana. Moana has become a very profitable franchise for Disney, with two popular animated movies already released and another likely on the way, making it a good candidate for a live-action adaptation. Despite a busy July release schedule that includes films like Minions & Monsters, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Disney seems optimistic about the new film. A recent trailer for Moana sparked conversation, particularly about the appearance of Dwayne Johnson’s wig as Maui. Now, the team behind the film is sharing details about the design of live-action Maui.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Moana director Thomas Kail explained how they chose Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s wig for the character of Maui. Kail described visualizing Maui as a traditional navigator, imagining him with the wind in his hair on a canoe. Because much of the film takes place on water, the team had to consider how the wig would look when wet, and the wig itself weighed seven pounds when fully saturated – a significant weight considering how long Johnson wore it each day.

Johnson shared with the media that the wig and bodysuit made performing quite difficult. He hadn’t expected the extra weight – around 40 pounds from the prosthetics, hair, and suit – and had to quickly adjust. He explained that performers need freedom of movement to express emotions, and it was challenging to do that while carrying the added weight.

Will Moana Backlash Hurt the Film’s Box Office Prospects?

As a huge fan of Moana, I’ve been following the reactions to the live-action adaptation closely, and it’s really interesting to see how difficult it is to bring that animated magic to life! What looks so amazing in animation doesn’t always translate easily, and I think that’s what we’re seeing here. Animated movies, especially Disney ones, aren’t necessarily trying to be perfectly realistic – the artists have a lot of creative freedom to design characters in a way that best tells the story. Take Maui, for example. His look is instantly recognizable, and his long hair is such a big part of who he is. It looks fantastic animated, but a lot of us are finding the live-action version just… doesn’t quite feel right. It’s like it falls into that ‘uncanny valley’ where it’s close to realistic, but not quite, and it’s a little unsettling.

The unusual appearance of Dwayne Johnson with a full head of hair in the Moana trailers has surprised some viewers. While people are familiar with his voice in animated roles, seeing him in costume as Maui is different. Audiences may grow accustomed to it as the movie is more widely promoted, or when they see the finished film. However, it’s worth considering if the negative reaction to this visual change could affect how well the movie performs in theaters. Moana has the potential to earn over $1 billion this summer, but current early reactions are somewhat divided.

Online criticism doesn’t always reflect what most moviegoers think. For example, most families who want to see Moana probably won’t be bothered by how the live-action Maui looks. That won’t stop them from buying tickets. So, the debate over Dwayne Johnson’s appearance likely won’t affect the film’s success. However, other things could still influence how well the movie does.

Families who loved Moana will have another fun movie choice with the new release, Minions & Monsters. The Despicable Me series, including the Minions films, has always been very popular, with Minions: The Rise of Gru earning almost $940 million worldwide just four years ago. It’s uncertain if audiences will want two family films so close together, but the darker themes of the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day might make Moana a better choice for parents with younger children.
