Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returns for its second season in February. But that’s not all for fans of the Titan universe! The streamer also announced a spin-off series starring Wyatt Russell, who will play and produce a show focusing on the early life of his character, Lee Shaw. This news confirms earlier reports. Joby Harold, who developed the spin-off, will also be in charge of planning future Monsterverse content for Apple TV+. In the first season of Monarch, Wyatt Russell portrayed a younger Lee Shaw, while his father, Kurt Russell, played the older version. Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premieres on February 27, 2026.
Apple TV described the new series:
Wyatt Russell stars in and helps produce this new series, which tells the story of Colonel Lee Shaw. In 1984, Shaw went on a dangerous secret mission to stop the Soviets from deploying a massive new weapon – one powerful enough to devastate the United States and change the course of the Cold War.
As a lifelong movie fan, I was thrilled to hear Harold talk about continuing the legacy of these incredible films. He said he feels incredibly lucky to be involved in expanding such a beloved universe, and he really praised Apple and Legendary for being fantastic partners. It’s clear they’re all dedicated to honoring these cinematic icons and bringing them to audiences with the respect they deserve, which is amazing to hear!
Jason Clodfelter, President and Managing Director at Legendary Television, added:
Joby is a truly gifted storyteller who really understands what fans love about the Monsterverse. We’re excited to expand our collaboration with him and Safehouse Pictures, working alongside Apple, to launch a new and thrilling chapter for the franchise.
What’s Next for the Monsterverse Franchise?

Apple TV+
The Monsterverse began in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. Jordan Vogt-Roberts followed up with Kong: Skull Island in 2017, and Michael Dougherty directed Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. Like many popular franchises, these films built towards a major crossover event, which arrived with Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The film’s release was initially delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it eventually premiered in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously in 2021. Despite affecting box office numbers, its success led to a sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The team-up between Godzilla and Kong has worked better than other attempts at shared cinematic universes, probably because they’ve released movies at a steady pace, one at a time. The next film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, directed by Grant Sputore, is planned for 2027. Beyond Supernova, Season 2 of Monarch, and a spin-off focusing on Lee Shaw, there are currently no other live-action projects in development.
The animated series Skull Island premiered on Netflix in 2023. Although it hasn’t been officially renewed, fans recently received the comic book Return to Skull Island. Plus, Godzilla has been appearing in various comic books lately.
