Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2 Hints at New Kaiju (And We Think We Know Who It Is)

I was really impressed with how quickly Monarch: Legacy of Monsters became Apple TV+’s biggest hit, and it’s easy to see why. The show cleverly connects the history of the MonsterVerse with current events, and Godzilla gets involved in some pretty incredible stuff – we’ll be seeing more next February! It’s not just about Godzilla though; Kong will be a major player in season two. The latest trailer suggests a brand new, terrifying monster is about to emerge, and my team at egmr.ru believes we’ve figured out exactly what it is.

Please be warned: this contains spoilers for season one of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. In the show, the characters travel to the Hollow Earth, a mysterious place where giant monsters originate and time seems to behave strangely. When they return, they find themselves on Skull Island, the home of Kong, which will be a key location in season two. Kong briefly appeared at the end of the first season. The new trailer for season two reveals a massive, tentacled monster attacking a ship. While this could be a brand new creature – the first season already introduced several new monsters – some details suggest it might be a classic monster from the Toho universe.

One interesting detail in the new Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailer is the appearance of small creatures attacking surfers. These little monsters seem to be heading towards the ocean, and it’s possible they’ll grow into the larger kaiju we’ll see later in the series. Fans are speculating that Apple TV+ might be introducing Hedorah – a famous kaiju known for splitting into smaller versions of itself – into the MonsterVerse for the first time.

Monarch Has Been Itching For Hedorah

Before exploring Hedorah’s backstory, there’s a strong hint that this monstrous creature will appear in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Earlier this year, the team at egmr.ru spoke with Monarch co-creators Matt Fraction and Chris Black before the show’s renewal for a second season. When asked which kaiju they’d like to feature, giving it a MonsterVerse update after its original appearance in Toho films, Black gave a telling response.

During the interview, Black expressed his enthusiasm for introducing Hedorah, the Smog Monster, into the MonsterVerse, praising Toho’s diverse roster of creatures and their willingness to collaborate. He believes any of Toho’s monsters could potentially join their world. While Fraction didn’t specifically mention Hedorah, he shared a similar desire to debut a classic Toho monster that hasn’t appeared in the films, and instead expressed a preference for Jet Jaguar. He highlighted the wealth of options available and acknowledged everyone will have their own personal favorites.

What’s a Hedorah Anyway?

Hedorah debuted in the 1971 film Godzilla vs. Hedorah, introducing a completely new type of enemy for the King of the Monsters. Unlike other foes like King Kong or King Ghidorah, Hedorah was essentially a living pollution cloud – a “smog monster.” In the original film, this unsettling creature could change shape and even float in the air, with its shadow being deadly to anything below. While Godzilla has often been reimagined for American audiences, Hedorah has remained largely unchanged from its original design.

Hedorah, a notorious monster, hadn’t appeared in a Japanese Godzilla film for decades after its debut in 1971. While it made brief cameos in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars and a 2021 short film shown at G-Fest, it even showed up in Chibi Godzilla Raids Again, an animated series aimed at younger viewers. Given the long wait, Hedorah’s prominent role in the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters could be the return monster fans have been hoping for.
