The Monster anthology series by Ryan Murphy, which has been a huge success, is returning once more to our screens in October. It’s time for us to reconnect with it again!

The Netflix show tells the tale of infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and, more recently, the story of brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, portrayed by Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, who were convicted for killing their parents.

It’s been revealed that the fourth season will delve into the story of Lizzie Borden, who was accused and found not guilty of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother. Although casting for the series featuring Lizzie has been confirmed, there are only a few weeks left before the third season – centered around Ed Gein – premieres.

Actor Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy is headlining the production, portraying Edward Gein, an American murderer with a strong suspicion of being a serial killer. His atrocities have served as the basis for numerous terrifying fictional characters.

According to the description from Netflix: “In the frosty landscapes of 1950s rural Wisconsin, there dwelt an amiable, peaceful loner named Eddie Gein. He lived modestly on his deteriorating farm, concealing a chilling abode of horrors so gruesome that it would reshape the very essence of American nightmares.

Compelled by feelings of isolation, psychosis, and an unrelenting fixation on his mother, the horrific acts committed by Gein created a unique type of villain that would terrorize Hollywood for many years.

However, who exactly was he? Delve into the authentic narrative of Ed Gein, an individual whose life serves as the inspiration behind the latest season of Netflix’s series Monster.

Monster season 3 true story: Who was the real Ed Gein?

Hailing from Wisconsin in 1906, Edward Theodore Gein – later known as Ed – was born to parents George (a heavy drinker) and Augusta (deeply religious), and he had an older brother named Henry.

The household was strict, guided by Augusta’s teachings, which eventually drew Ed’s deep loyalty, despite her harsh and controlling nature. Around 1915, Augusta is believed to have relocated the family from La Crosse to Plainfield, both in Wisconsin, to a farm. Ed seldom ventured beyond the farm boundaries, except for school, until his father’s death in 1940, which triggered the brothers to assume greater responsibility on the farm.

In 1944, tragedy struck when Ed’s older brother Henry met his demise during a routine brush burning incident. The fire got out of control, and the circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear at the time. Initially reporting Henry as missing to the authorities, Ed eventually led them to where his body was discovered. Given Ed’s later life events, there have been suggestions that he may have had a role in his brother’s untimely death.

One year after Ed’s mother, Augusta, passed away in 1945, he secluded himself completely, leaving his house in disarray while maintaining Augusta’s room as a sort of sacred space. Following her demise, Ed found employment as a handyman (and occasionally a babysitter), but also grew fascinated by books on human anatomy.

1957 saw the mysterious disappearance of Bernice Worden, a 58-year-old hardware store owner from Plainfield. Not long before she vanished, she had been spotted by authorities, leading them to Ed’s residence. It was at this home that they found Bernice’s decapitated body. Her head was later discovered in a box, and her heart was found inside a plastic bag.

After a more detailed examination, the police discovered that inside Ed’s residence, he had accumulated an array of human body parts, which he allegedly used for crafting masks and garments that he reportedly wore throughout his home. Additionally, various household items, including bowls, were uncovered that appeared to have been fashioned from human skulls.

The authorities found out that Edward was a habitual grave robber, taking human remains on a frequent basis. Additionally, they uncovered the head of a woman who went missing in 1954 – Mary Hogan, a 54-year-old tavern owner – at Edward’s residence.

Ed acknowledged that he had taken the lives of two women who bore a striking resemblance to his deceased mother. However, he chose to plead not guilty due to insanity. In 1958, following a diagnosis of schizophrenia, it was decided he was unfit to stand trial and was confined in various mental health facilities.

In 1968, Ed was declared eligible for trial and later convicted for the murder of Worden. It was reported that because of budget constraints, the prosecution handled just one murder case, leaving Ed untried for Hogan’s murder.

Although the police attempted to link him to other homicides and missing persons cases, they failed to gather enough conclusive evidence or reach a solid conclusion.

At the point of his sentencing, it was determined that Gein was mentally ill and he was transferred to a mental health facility. This is where he stayed until his passing in 1984 at the age of 77, due to complications related to lung cancer and respiratory issues.
