If any title were more fitting for a documentary about Harry and Meghan, it might be “Monsters of California.” However, this film is actually a blend of teenage humor and self-discovery reminiscent of the works by John Hughes. But here’s an interesting twist: UFOs, Bigfoot, and conspiracy theories are also part of the storyline. Interestingly, Tom DeLonge, the frontman of Blink 182, directs this film for his directorial debut.
I’m captivated by a thrilling tale about a group of three teenagers, headed by Dallas (Jack Samson). When they aren’t cruising on their skateboards, these friends are ghost hunters. But for Dallas, it’s not just a hobby – it’s a personal mission to find his missing father, who vanished under strange circumstances, seemingly abducted by UFOs.
Delonge, who co-wrote the script, gives Dallas a platform to explore his fascination with conspiracy theories. Despite his mother’s devout faith, Dallas leans more toward the paranormal. So, along with his two companions, they embark on an adventure that intertwines UFO conspiracies and even throws in the legend of Bigfoot for added intrigue. However, the story also includes plenty of gross-out humor and slapstick moments.
It’s evident that the trio doesn’t fit the bill, yet they deliver commendable performances. Additionally, Arianne Zucker portrays Dallas’ mom exceptionally well, while Casper Van Dien convincingly takes on his role as her new partner and a military figure embroiled in a covert operation – both consistently delivering solid performances.
The film “Monsters of California” is lengthy, inconsistent in its mood, and many of the jokes fall flat, yet DeLonge delivers a commendable directorial debut, showcasing his own fascination with the enigmatic ‘beyond’ through an ending speech that serves as a heartfelt appeal for harmony and an openness to the mysteries of the universe.
