Months After It Ended On CBS, Blue Bloods Is Still Dominating With Viewers. It Makes Me Bummed About The Spinoff

In 2024, the long-running series Blue Bloods concluded its 14-season run, but the story isn’t over yet. The franchise will carry on through a new spinoff titled Boston Blue, set to premiere on CBS in fall 2025. This upcoming series will focus on Detective Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, as he teams up with a new partner in Boston. Although the idea of the spinoff is intriguing, it’s disappointing that the original show, which remains popular among viewers, isn’t continuing as a procedural.

In the year 2024, during December, the popular TV show “Blue Bloods” concluded its run, leaving many viewers in shock as its termination seemed unexpected. Despite being one of CBS’s flagship series and maintaining decent ratings on Friday nights, often considered a less favorable slot for shows, the decision to cancel it raised eyebrows. The final episode attracted massive viewership, making it the fourth highest-rated scripted show on CBS during the 2024-25 season. This strong performance once again suggests that the cancellation might have been an error.

Despite having aired its finale several months ago, Blue Bloods continues to garner impressive viewership on Paramount+. According to FlixPatrol, it ranks #7 among TV shows on the platform. Notably, it frequently features in the Top 10 and occasionally even tops the list. While exact numbers aren’t disclosed, its consistent presence within the Top 10 suggests a substantial number of viewers are still tuning in to the series.

The data presented here only strengthens the curiosity as to why the show got canceled originally. It’s even more puzzling given that CBS has approved a spinoff, indicating they still believe in the franchise’s potential.

The Boston Blue franchise is set to undergo a significant change, as Donnie Wahlberg is the sole original cast member remaining in the main lineup. Tom Selleck, who plays Frank Reagan, and other cast members have expressed their disappointment over the show’s cancellation. It remains unclear how most fans feel about Wahlberg’s upcoming spinoff. While I must admit that I am glad the franchise will continue, I harbor some concerns about this new setting and characters in the spinoff.

Despite this, the sequel series of Blue Bloods will continue to include at least two other members of the Reagan family. Danny will be accompanied in Boston by his youngest son, Sean, who will now be portrayed by Mika Amonsen instead of Andrew Terraciano. Moreover, Bridget Moynahan, a long-time franchise member, is set to reprise her role as Danny’s sister, Erin, in the premiere episode and will also return later in the season to direct. Although this brings some reassurance, I am still anticipating the presence of more familiar faces.

Experience the thrilling world of Blue Bloods on Paramount+, available at just $7.99 per month or $79.99 yearly. I’m curious if the debut of Boston Blue will boost the visibility of Blue Bloods in the streaming world. It could very well happen, and rest assured, I’ll be monitoring the original series’ streaming numbers once its spinoff is released. Fingers crossed that the new show lives up to its predecessor. In the interim, if you’re interested in watching Blue Bloods, a Paramount+ subscription would be the way to go, as all 14 seasons are available on the platform.
