Mormon Wives’ Star Layla Taylor Unveils Major Hair Transformation

Layla Taylor isn’t keeping her new look a secret.

The star of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives recently changed her look, trading her long, dark hair for full, blonde braids.

On December 18th, Layla posted a TikTok video showing off her look in New York City. The video first featured her with long, black hair extensions, and then showed her new braided hairstyle, worn partially up and partially down.

The reality TV personality, who shares 4-year-old Oliver and 3-year-old Maxwell with her ex-husband Clayton Wessel, shared a photo with the simple caption, “Growth.”

People flooded Layla’s comments with praise for her new look, with one fan writing, “Proud black girl moment,” a comment Layla herself liked. Her colleague, Ben Affleck, also showed his support, simply writing, “YESSS LAYLA.”

The 24-year-old actress had been getting her hair extensions done by her colleague and hairstylist, Jessi Ngatikaura. However, by season three, she decided to work with a stylist who had more experience with Black hair. It was a tough decision, but Jessi was understanding and supportive.

She explained to The Hollywood Reporter last month that while the decision seemed harsh, she realized it wasn’t meant to hurt her and was actually about helping her hair – and also about her learning more about herself.

Layla, who is biracial, was incredibly proud of herself for making the move.

I didn’t immediately understand how much sharing that would affect people,” she said. “I was raised in a mostly white community, and for most of my life, I identified more with that side of myself because it felt safer and that’s what I believed was beautiful when I was growing up.

She explained that when you’re constantly exposed to a certain beauty standard, you start to believe straight hair and lighter skin are the most attractive qualities. She shared that she had difficult experiences as a child, even trying to lighten her skin once and refusing to ever wear her hair in its natural curls.

She noted there “was a lot of shame around half of myself.”

Now, the influencer has some sweet advice for anyone struggling with their identity. 

As a lifestyle expert, I always tell people that what sets you apart is actually your strength, not a weakness! Truly. It’s so important to embrace your unique qualities and love yourself completely – flaws and all. Don’t ever be afraid to be authentically you. That’s where your power lies.

To any child who feels different or lonely because they don’t look like everyone else, remember you are wonderful and capable of achieving anything you dream of. What makes us unique actually makes us strong.
