Digital Eclipse’s forthcoming compilation titled “Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection,” which resembles a documentary, is yet to unveil additional games. However, it might not include games from the PlayStation 2 era in its lineup.
Speaking with IGN at Evo this weekend, Head of Production Stephen Frost revealed:
As a passionate enthusiast, I strive to incorporate a multitude of games in our platform, however, there are a few factors that often prevent us from doing so. These include technical complications related to emulation, licensing, or legal hurdles. At our core, we’re dedicated to preserving the spirit of the arcade era. We recognize that every great story needs a starting point, and for us, that’s where this journey begins.
While there’s a vast community of Mortal Kombat 9 fans, it wouldn’t be fair or historically accurate to start our narrative at such a later installment. From our perspective of chronicling the studio’s evolution, it’s crucial to lay a solid foundation for this franchise’s rich history before we can progress.
Frost made it clear that while there are several unannounced games still in the pipeline, further details will be shared at both Gamescom and PAX towards the end of the year.
Additionally, he hinted that the collection might receive downloadable content (DLC), similar to how the Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration was supported.
I’m crossing my fingers that this launch goes as well as anticipated, which could lead to further installments in the Mortal Kombat series.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t spill the beans about which classic Mortal Kombat titles are making a comeback, but my hunch is we’ll see the PS1 spin-offs, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. There’s even a possibility that Mortal Kombat Gold from the Dreamcast could join the fray! Keep your fingers crossed, fellow warriors.
