MTV Shutting Down Some of Its Music Channels After 40 Years

There are sure to be more people saying, “I want my MTV” in the near future.

Okay, music fans, here’s some news that might bum you out. As someone who keeps a close eye on how we enjoy our entertainment, I’m letting you know that MTV is making some changes. They’re actually shutting down five of their UK channels – MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live – at the end of the year. The BBC reported it, and honestly, it feels like the end of an era for those of us who grew up with these channels! It means a shift in how we’ll access those nostalgic tunes and live performances, so get ready to find new ways to enjoy your favorites.

MTV HD will continue to broadcast, featuring popular reality shows such as *Naked Dating UK* and *Geordie Shore*.

TopMob News has reached out to MTV for comment.

MTV originally started in the United States in 1981, playing popular music videos. The very first video shown was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles. Six years later, in 1987, MTV expanded to Europe, and by 1997, the United Kingdom had its own dedicated MTV channel.

It’s tough to see MTV U.K. end after so many years, and many people are feeling that loss. Simone Angel, a former MTV VJ, told the BBC she was “really sad and a little in disbelief,” even though she knew it was inevitable.

The artist, 53, explained that it’s important to support musicians and enjoy live music again. While we’re all finding ways to connect with music online, MTV used to be the central place where everyone experienced it together, and that loss is truly upsetting.

The TV star reminisced about the beginning of MTV in the U.K., describing it as a really exciting and chaotic period.

“It was like being on a school trip without any teachers,” she shared. “We had so much fun.”

As Simone pointed out, MTV Europe was incredibly influential in the 1990s, essentially paving the way for the internet as we know it today.

At the time, our channel reached more people than any other in the world,” she said. “We had an audience of 100 to 150 million viewers.”

Even though she understands the need to adapt to change, she still feels a sense of loss as things are ending.

Seriously, can you BELIEVE they even considered messing with such an iconic brand? It’s MTV! It’s instantly recognizable worldwide! Why would anyone even *think* about letting it become just another reality TV channel? It’s so much more than that, it *should* be so much more! It’s like they don’t even understand what made it special in the first place.
