The TV movie *Murder Before Evensong* is based on the popular first book in Reverend Richard Coles’s Canon Clement Mysteries series. It features Matthew Lewis as a vicar who is shocked when a body is discovered at his church.
The show introduces Daniel, who lives with his mother, Audrey, who is a widow, and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.
Daniel’s proposal to update the church unexpectedly splits the community, and the discovery of a dead body behind the building only makes things worse.
I’m happy to share that while Nick Hicks-Beach actually did the writing for this adaptation – you might know his work on shows like Lewis, DCI Banks, and Midsomer Murders – the original author, Coles, is completely on board with how it turned out. It’s great to know he approves!
He said it’s incredibly rewarding and exciting to see the adaptation come to life. The team did a fantastic job, and it’s wonderful to see the story interpreted through other people’s creativity.
When you finish a book and send it to a publisher, it’s like saying goodbye. After that, it truly comes alive with each reader, existing in their own unique way. I’ve always been amazed by the many lives a book can have. It’s wonderful to see talented people collaborate and create something new inspired by your work – something you never even imagined.
A number of familiar faces appear alongside Lewis, plus some you might not recognise.

Matthew Lewis as Canon Daniel Clement

Canon Daniel Clement is the rector of Champton St Mary, known for being friendly and easy to talk to. His life is disrupted when his challenging mother unexpectedly visits. However, a bigger problem arises when he discovers the body of Anthony Bowness, a parishioner who was investigating the town’s history during the war.
Matthew Lewis is famous for his role as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films. Beyond that, he’s also starred in TV shows like Avoidance, All Creatures Great and Small, Ripper Street, and Happy Valley.
Amanda Redman as Audrey Clement

Audrey Clement is Daniel’s mother. According to Redman, she grew up during a difficult time and belonged to a generation known for its resilience and quiet strength. He admires her ability to cope with challenges and persevere without complaint.
According to Redman, Audrey deeply loves Daniel, but she comes from a generation that didn’t show affection to their children very openly. Their relationship is a little difficult, but Redman believes they share many similarities.
Amanda Redman is known for her roles in several popular shows and films, including New Tricks, At Home with the Braithwaites, The Good Karma Hospital, Sexy Beast, and Dangerfield.
Amit Shah as DS Neil Vanloo

According to Shah, Detective Sergeant Neil Vanloo is a detective from Manchester who is known for being thorough, open-minded, professional, and a creative thinker.
Neil lacks the modern tools and resources available to the police, forcing him to rely on his ingenuity and whatever he can find. Fortunately, he recognizes Daniel as a valuable asset, given Daniel’s extensive network of contacts in Champton.
Besides his current work, Amit Shah has also been in shows like Happy Valley, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, and The Other One.
Adam James as Bernard, Lord de Floures

Who is Bernard, Lord de Floures? The patron of Daniel’s church. He lives in Champton House.
James explained that he believes the man is very much stuck in his old ways and is struggling to adapt to today’s world. He described him as someone set in his habits who isn’t handling modern life very well.
Playing Bernard was a fascinating challenge. I really wanted to portray a believable man, not just a stuffy stereotype of the era. He’s grappling with huge questions about his family’s legacy and the future of their estate. We see this early on when he hosts a gathering of prominent families – he’s subtly trying to arrange a suitable match for his son, Alex, though he doesn’t come right out and say it.
Besides his well-known roles, Adam James has also appeared in a number of other popular television series and films, including Doctor Foster, The Couple Next Door, Hotel Portofino, Treason, The Day of the Jackal, The Suspect, Vigil, I May Destroy You, and Belgravia.
Tamzin Outhwaite as Stella Harper

Who is Stella Harper? She runs a high-end fashion boutique.
Besides her role on EastEnders, Tamzin Outhwaite has appeared in several other TV shows and films, including The Wives, Murder Is Easy, The Tower, Ridley Road, New Tricks, The Fixer, and Hotel Babylon.
Nina Toussaint-White as Jane Thwaite

Who is Jane Thwaite? The church organist. She is married to a photographer for the local paper.
I was totally hooked on Nina Toussaint-White’s performance in something recently and immediately wondered what else she’d been in! Turns out, she’s been in a lot of great shows – I recognize her from EastEnders, Emmerdale, and a few other things like The Sister, Witness Number 3, Showtrial, Shetland, and The Feed. She’s really versatile!
Marion Bailey as Kath Sharman

Who is Kath Sharman? Kath is on the parish council and lives with her sister.
Poppy Allen Quarmby plays Young Kath.
What else has Marion Bailey been in? You probably know her from The Crown.
Meghan Treadway as Honor de Floures

Honor de Floures is Bernard’s daughter. James observed that she appears to share her father’s approach to running the household.
What else has Meghan Treadway been in? Her credits include Flack and The Outlaws.
Alexander Delamain as Alex de Floures

Alex de Floures is Bernard’s son, and Bernard is attempting to arrange a marriage for him. According to James, Bernard relied heavily on schooling to raise his son, and now that Alex is becoming an adult, problems are starting to arise.
Adam describes Alex as an “outlier” in the family, “and that’s where the drama lies”.
What else has Alexander Delamain been in? This is his most notable role to date.
