Be warned: this contains spoilers for the first episode of *Murder in a Small Town* Season 2, titled “Acts of Murder.” The episode is available to stream the day after it airs with a Hulu subscription.
The popular TV show set in Gibsons, a town seemingly attracting murderers, is returning in 2025 for a second season. Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk) are facing fresh obstacles, but their relationship appears to be thriving. However, Mayor Holman (Marcia Gay Harden) is poised to cause trouble. Season 2 directly addresses a concern many viewers had with Cassandra in Season 1 – that she was often only involved in Alberg’s stories. Kristin Kreuk recently shared with TopMob that Cassandra will have a more independent and significant role this season.
The first season ended with a hint that Cassandra would become involved in local politics, and Season 2 immediately followed through on that idea. She won a special election to join the town council in Gibsons and quickly found herself overwhelmed with requests from residents. Her first request was a bit humorous – a man complaining about his neighbor’s noisy rooster – but things became more challenging when the mayor reminded her of her promise to fund a new art center during her campaign.
Mayor Holman doesn’t seem to support the art center, and she’s likely to create obstacles for Cassandra this season. She’s already begun interfering, attempting to convince Alberg to dissuade Cassandra from pursuing the project by offering him additional resources if he does. Though she doesn’t appear to be directly involved in the murders Alberg investigates, she has the potential to be a compelling antagonist for Cassandra, and both Cassandra and the actress Kristin Kreuk deserve a strong opponent this season.
The biggest weakness with the character last season was that the show, *Murder in a Small Town*, struggled to integrate her into the central storylines, both romantically and as the town librarian. This sometimes made it feel like Kristin Kreuk wasn’t truly Rossif Sutherland’s equal as a lead. Jeff Wachtel, an executive producer, admitted this was an issue earlier this year and said it would be fixed in the new season. Kreuk herself recently shared that Cassandra will have a more significant role in the main plot this season, explaining to me:
We constantly discuss this dynamic with Cassandra – how our show differs from typical crime dramas where the main love interest isn’t connected to the cases. It was a challenge figuring out how to make it work. This season, I’m also involved in my own separate murder mystery, partnering with Karl’s daughter.
I loved how quickly Alberg and Cassandra moved beyond that initial romantic tension in Season 1 – it’s great they’re more than just a potential couple. I’m really excited to see what more the show does with Cassandra’s character, and I’m *totally* hooked by what Kristin Kreuk hinted at about a murder mystery involving Alberg’s daughter. They had a bit of a rocky start last season, getting to know each other, but now Cassandra’s a council member, which opens up so many possibilities. Kreuk mentioned that…
I was really pleased with the story they developed for Cassandra, which allowed her to be seriously challenged, even though it revolved around a seemingly dull local political situation. Marcia Gay Harden’s powerful presence transformed it into a captivating story, making even the urgent task of solving murders feel compelling.
Marcia Gay Harden is joining the cast of *Murder in a Small Town* as a series regular – her first since *So Help Me Todd* ended in 2024. Her character looks like she’ll definitely stir things up in the second season. Hopefully, she won’t create problems for Alberg and Cassandra’s relationship, but it’s still too soon to know what will happen.
Season 2 of *Murder in a Small Town* really brought in some big names! The guest star list includes Camryn Manheim (from *Law & Order*), Tyler Posey (*Teen Wolf*), William B. Davis (*The X-Files*), Jamie Chung (*Lovecraft Country*), Sara Canning (*The Vampire Diaries*), and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, in his last role before his passing. Plus, Noah Reid will be back as Tommy Cummins, the serial killer from Season 1.
Don’t miss new episodes of *Murder in a Small Town* this season, featuring Cassandra and Alberg! Tune in to Fox on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern, before the return of *Doc* Season 2 at 9 p.m. Eastern.
