As a seasoned anime enthusiast who’s been around the block more times than I can count, I must say that Kohei Horikoshi’s approach to the UA Academy films in My Hero Academia is a clever nod to the good old days of Dragon Ball. It harks back to the simpler, standalone stories of our childhood, which were as much a part of the experience as the main series itself.
My Hero Academia: Your Turn Next
Initially, Kohei Horikoshi reminisced about his childhood memories of watching new Dragon Ball films at the community center. In contrast to these movies, which usually occurred outside the main storyline, modern series like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen feature films that depict events directly from their manga narratives.
My Hero Academia Takes a Page From Dragon Ball
Instead of crafting each My Hero Academia movie to tell a story integral to the main narrative, similar to what Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, Horikoshi chose to emulate the style of Dragon Ball. Each film centered around UA Academy does contribute to the overarching plot but is not essential viewing to fully grasp Deku and his companions’ lives. “To be honest, I personally prefer movies like Dragon Ball, which had standalone stories exclusive to those films. It’s great that all our movies have followed this pattern up until now.”
With the manga of “My Hero Academia” coming to an end, many enthusiasts are curious about what lies ahead for the series after the premiere of “My Hero Academia: You’re Next”. As of now, there’s no definitive announcement that the fourth movie marks the end of the franchise, indicating that more films might be on the horizon. However, the specific locations and timelines where these potential future movies would unfold remain uncertain for now.
