The anime adaptation of My Hero Academia is nearing its conclusion, and a key character’s backstory hasn’t been fully explored. While the anime is currently finishing its final season and wrapping up the major conflict between heroes and villains, a recent episode featured a significant event that lacked impact because crucial context was missing. Fortunately, there’s still hope that this backstory will be revealed elsewhere.
The anime My Hero Academia recently revealed a significant part of Shota Aizawa’s history: the villain Kurogiri was created using the body of Aizawa and Present Mic’s old friend, Oboro Shirakumo. The story showed the heroes trying to save Shirakumo from his fate, and a key moment occurred when they used Kurogiri’s powers to reach Deku one last time. However, this part of the story hasn’t been fully shown in the anime yet, but it will be soon.
My Hero Academia Fans Are Missing Shirakumo and Aizawa’s Origin

Episode 8 of My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON shows Aizawa and Present Mic watching Kurogiri attempt to save Tomura Shigaraki, which reminds them of their late friend Shirakumo and moves them to tears. However, the emotional impact of this scene feels lessened because key details from the original manga are still left out, a problem that existed both in the manga and now in the anime adaptation.
Actually, Aizawa’s backstory was first shown in the spin-off series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Set years before the main story, it features a young Aizawa working alongside vigilante heroes. A whole story arc dives into his time as a student at U.A. Academy, showing his friendships with Present Mic and Shirakumo. This arc also reveals what eventually happens to Shirakumo.
You Need to Watch My Hero Academia: Vigilantes

I found the Shota Aizawa backstory in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes really interesting. It felt like Kohei Horikoshi needed a way to share this crucial part of the story, but didn’t have space for it in the main My Hero Academia series. Because of that, the anime skipped over it too. Thankfully, the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime will fill in that missing piece – and I’m expecting we’ll see it in the second season, which is coming out soon!
Though the final season of My Hero Academia has only three episodes left, fans won’t have to wait long for more! Season 2 of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is scheduled to premiere in January 2026. While it’s unclear if the new season will cover the important Aizawa story arc, it will be essential viewing for anyone wanting a complete understanding of the My Hero Academia universe.
