The anime My Hero Academia showed the full extent of Dabi’s power after revealing he was a member of the Todoroki family. The actor who played Dabi had been anticipating the chance to fully embody the character. A major turning point in the series’ final conflict was Endeavor remaining a top hero despite his flawed and abusive past. Dabi aimed to destroy everything Endeavor held dear, and he shockingly revealed himself to be Endeavor’s son, who was abandoned as a child and became a villain because of it.
The reveal of Dabi’s identity was a pivotal moment for his character, pushing him to become even more unstable. Jason Liebrecht, the voice actor for Dabi in My Hero Academia, shared with ComicBook that a fan accidentally spoiled the secret for him while it was still unfolding in the manga. However, he used that knowledge to fuel his anticipation for the opportunity to fully express the character’s turmoil.
My Hero Academia’s Dabi Got His True Identity Spoiled
Liebrecht, the voice actor, admitted he knew Dabi’s true identity before it was shown in the anime. A fan had told him the secret—which was originally revealed in the manga three and a half years earlier—in a chance encounter. He said it happened so quickly, it wasn’t a major event, but it did influence how he acted when the reveal finally occurred in the anime.
I prefer to go into scenes knowing as little as possible. I feel like if I react to something as it unfolds, right there in the booth, my response will be the most genuine. It’s fine if I pick things up as we go, but if someone tells me what’s coming, it ruins the moment and I just want to know everything that’s happening. That approach really helped me prepare for a specific scene. Once I found out what it was, I was just on edge, constantly wondering when it would happen. There were a lot of other storylines building up at the same time, so when it finally did happen, it felt like everything came together.
Finding out who Dabi really was felt like a huge relief. I was prepared for it and it felt like I could finally talk freely. For a long time, I’d been asked to only discuss the anime and avoid revealing any other information, which was difficult when I knew more. But once his identity was out, we were able to really explore the details of his backstory and inner life.
Dabi Was Fully Unleashed for My Hero Academia’s Final Seasons

That’s when he really began to understand Dabi. He realized they had a lot in common, with Dabi’s experiences increasingly mirroring his own childhood trauma and difficult family background. As he learned more, the process became deeply healing and emotionally releasing. From that point on, the connection between them grew even stronger.
Liebrecht described the experience as uniquely fulfilling, allowing him to revisit personal experiences through the lens of a powerful character, but without any real-world consequences. He felt empowered to explore past events with a new sense of control, something he hadn’t encountered in any other project. He believes this opportunity is truly one-of-a-kind and unlikely to happen again.
