Given the recent trend of popular anime like One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Avatar: The Last Airbender being adapted into live-action, it wasn’t a surprise when plans for a live-action My Hero Academia were announced. Netflix and Legendary Pictures are working on the film, but details have been scarce. However, writer Jason Fuchs recently shared some exciting news about the project, specifically how closely the original series creator, Kohei Horikoshi, will be involved in bringing the story to life.
I recently read an interview with Jason Fuchs where he discussed how involved Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, is with the upcoming live-action adaptation. It sounds a lot like how Eiichiro Oda handles the One Piece Netflix series – Horikoshi has the final say on every change and decision. Fuchs explained that Horikoshi reviews everything – treatments, outlines, scenes, you name it – and gives his feedback with a simple thumbs up or down. That really reassured Fuchs, and makes him confident they’ll create something that both he and the fans will love. He also mentioned they’re still in the very early stages of development, so we shouldn’t expect to see the film anytime soon.
The Appeal of Class 1-A
In addition to confirming Kohei Horikoshi’s involvement with the movie, Jason Fuchs focused on capturing the heart of the My Hero Academia anime and understanding why it resonates with audiences. He wanted to create something that felt true to the source material, respecting established storylines while also being accessible to newcomers. Fuchs also discussed why Izuku Midoriya, known as Deku, is such a compelling main character. He explained that Deku’s relatability stems from being one of the few people without a special ability in a world where almost everyone has one, making him and the other characters instantly engaging. Staying true to these characters was key to the entire process.
The live-action My Hero Academia movie is coming out at an interesting moment for the series, as both the manga and anime might have already finished their runs by then. However, fans won’t be left without new content, as the spin-off series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, is getting a second season. There are still plenty of chapters from the spin-off left to adapt, so it could potentially continue beyond that. Plus, there’s a good chance the main series will get another movie, since the latest anime film, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, wasn’t presented as the final one. As of now, though, no new anime movie has been officially announced.
