Channing Tatum initially gained fame for his role in the *Magic Mike* films, but he’s evolved significantly over the past 13 years. He’s proven himself as a capable dramatic actor—his recent performance in the thriller *Blink Twice* was particularly intense—and has also developed a talent for comedy, delivering many memorable lines in the *Jump Street* movies.
For ten years, actor Channing Tatum has been playfully greeted by fans shouting “My name is Jeff!” Now, he’s playing a real-life convict named Jeffrey Manchester in his new movie, *Roofman*. As someone also named Jeff, I had to ask him if he’d noticed the coincidence. Tatum found it amusing too, and even pointed out another connection to the film: it’s set in an old Toys “R” Us store, and Jeff is a common nickname for Geoffrey, the store’s giraffe mascot.

As someone named Jeff, I gladly accept Channing Tatum’s apology for the constant quoting of that line. It’s true – people almost automatically say it when they find out my name! But it’s been worth it, because Tatum is genuinely funny in the *Jump Street* movies, and he even made up some of the best parts himself. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, and haven’t seen the scene from *22 Jump Street*, let me explain:
It’s actually quite positive for people named Jeff that their name is associated with being ordinary. Often, ‘Jeff’ is used as a joke to describe someone or something as average or unremarkable. Think of the main character in the movie *Jeff Who Lives At Home*, or a scene from *Get Him To The Greek* where a Jeff is portrayed as incredibly unthreatening.
While still funny, *Roofman* tackles heavier themes than the *Jump Street* movies. Channing Tatum worked with director Derek Cianfrance, who had previously been turned down for the lead role in Cianfrance’s film *Blue Valentine* years earlier. The collaboration is excellent, and *Roofman* could easily become one of Tatum’s most acclaimed movies.
The latest *Jump Street* movie was intended to wrap up the series, but there’s still ongoing discussion about whether *23 Jump Street* will actually happen and what it would be like. However, this isn’t a major concern for Channing Tatum’s career, as he’s currently very successful at attracting audiences to theaters. He’s currently filming *Avengers: Doomsday*, marking his second time playing the character Gambit.
You can currently see him playing Jeff again in the new movie *Roofman*, now showing in theaters! For updates on other upcoming 2025 movie releases, stay tuned to TopMob.
