The Naruto series stands out as an extraordinary gem in the world of anime, boasting a captivating narrative centered on Shinobi (ninja). This popular series has swept across global audiences and left an indelible cultural mark. There are numerous noteworthy aspects of the show, such as its compelling protagonist, deep emotional resonance, intense rivalries, and richly diverse cast of remarkable characters. Despite having ended over a decade ago, Naruto continues to be ranked among the best anime productions. Nonetheless, it’s important to acknowledge that the series isn’t flawless; in fact, it might be considered one of the more imperfect anime series due to its extensive number of episodes, many of which are filler material. New viewers may initially find this intimidating.
Instead of simply revamping the pacing to match the manga, it’s clear that the story in Naruto could benefit from a remake. One of its main drawbacks, shared by many Shonen series, is the scarcity of engaging female characters. This aspect is particularly noticeable. The female characters in Naruto aren’t stereotypical per se, but the major issue lies in the fact that a character like Haruno Saukra is thrust into the central plot, a move that seems unnecessary and doesn’t significantly affect the story either way. On the other hand, Boruto, particularly since the introduction of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, has set up strong foundations for not one but two female characters who could potentially shape the narrative moving forward.
Boruto Has Already Laid Foundations For Naruto‘s Most Glaring Issue
The main concern with the character development in Naruto lies in the fact that the primary female characters, such as Sakura and Ino Yamanaka, seem overly focused on winning the affections of male characters like Sasuke Uchiha, which can be seen early in the series with Sakura talking negatively about Naruto’s orphan status to gain Sasuke’s favor. This pattern is particularly problematic during the Chunin Exam arc, where their rivalry for Sasuke results in an underwhelming fight that detracts from the overall quality of the storyline. Although it may be forgivable to include stereotypical characters, the series mistakenly suggests that Sakura plays a substantial role in shaping the narrative when, in fact, her impact is questionable.
In the sequel, Naruto Shippuden, Masashi Kishimoto’s portrayal of Sakura’s character takes a questionable turn as her main motivation remains centered on her feelings for Sasuke. One of the most debated scenes in the series unfolds when Sakura expresses false emotions towards Naruto, hoping to dissuade him from his relentless pursuit of bringing Sasuke back to the village. However, despite her intention being evident, she overlooks the fact that Naruto is no longer the boy who was deeply infatuated with her. Instead, he’s trying to reunite Sasuke because of genuine concern for him, not due to any residual feelings for Sakura.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that Sakura’s influence within the Naruto universe often seems counterproductive, such as her ill-advised attempt to harm Sasuke, despite being aware of her limitations, which also puts Kakashi in danger. Towards the end of the series, there was an attempt to elevate Sakura to equal status with Naruto and Sasuke, but this felt forced and left fans wincing at her dialogues. Her actions during the final battle were lackluster, feeling more like obligatory additions rather than significant contributions. The only instance where Sakura truly stood out was her fight against Sasori at the start of Naruto Shippuden. Conversely, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is establishing not one but two powerful female characters, Sarada and Himawari, who are poised to have a substantial and growing influence on the storyline, especially as it reaches its climax.
Here Is How Boruto Is Fixing Naruto’s Most Glaring Issues
Sarada Uchiha, with affection for her comrade Boruto, appears to channel these emotions constructively, in contrast to Sakura who often used hers to create turmoil. It was the intensity of Sarada’s feelings to safeguard Boruto that enabled her to unlock the Mangekyo Sharingan. She manifested this ability during a conversation with her father, Sasuke, where she expressed her belief that Boruto is not as villainous as portrayed, thus earning Sasuke as Boruto’s mentor.
Reflecting on this moment, it becomes clear that it lays a new groundwork for unleashing this mysterious force. Where Naruto discovered that witnessing sacrifice, personal grief, and enduring hardship were essential to its activation, Sarada managed to do so by her heartfelt determination to safeguard Boruto. This shows how an intense desire to protect, a positive emotion, can be equally or even more powerful than the negative feelings that previously triggered Uchiha to awaken this power.
In the storyline of Boruto, Hidari, a villain who shares some traits with Sasuke and is one of the awakened Ten-Tails, has taken center stage. Sasuke won’t appear until after Hidari is defeated in a significant showdown against Sarada. This makes Sarada a key character, likely to leave a lasting impression on the story. At the beginning of the Boruto sequel, viewers were also introduced to Himawari unlocking the power of the Nine-Tailed Beast, Kurama. Since Jura is eager to consume Naruto, and Himawari appears to possess chakra similar to that of Naruto through Kurama, she may find herself in danger as well.
This action could propel her into a pivotal role, and perhaps she’ll be instrumental in resolving Boruto and Kawaki’s dispute, considering their mutual goal of safeguarding their younger sister. Initially, Boruto received much criticism for failing to meet the high standards set by its predecessor, particularly due to excessive filler content in the sequel anime. However, the manga titled Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is not only rectifying this but also surpassing the achievements of Naruto where it fell short.
