Naruto’s Live-Action Movie Could Be Filming Sooner Than You Think

A live-action Naruto movie has been in development for some time, and recent reports suggest filming could begin sooner than expected. While Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto manga is a hugely popular series from Shonen Jump, it hasn’t yet been adapted into a live-action film – despite its long run and large fanbase. However, that’s about to change, as a live-action movie has been quietly progressing for the past few years.

A live-action Naruto movie produced by Hollywood has been in development since 2017, and it’s now moving closer to becoming a reality. Recent updates include a new director and writer, all with the approval of the series creator. According to industry insider DanielRPK, filming is expected to begin later this year.

Naruto Live-Action Film Reportedly Filming Late 2026

I’m really excited about the live-action Naruto movie! While we don’t have a ton of details yet – it’s tentatively planned to start filming in late 2026 – things are definitely moving forward. The big news from late 2024 was the confirmation that Destin Daniel Cretton – you might know him from directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Wonder Man, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – is going to be directing! Lionsgate is backing the project, and they’ve been involved with getting a live-action Naruto adaptation off the ground for a while now, which is awesome.

Destin Daniel Cretton will produce the upcoming live-action Naruto movie with Jeyun Munford’s Hisako company, along with Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Emmy Yu from Arad Productions, and Jeremy Latcham. Cretton is also co-writing the screenplay with Tasha Huo, though details about the writing process haven’t been released yet. If filming starts later this year, as planned after Cretton finishes work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it will be a significant step forward, and fans are eager for news about the cast and other details of this new adaptation.

Naruto’s Creator Approves Live-Action Movie

Good news for fans of the original Naruto anime and manga: the creator, Masashi Kishimoto, has given his approval to director Daniel Destin Cretton for the upcoming live-action movie. Kishimoto said he was already impressed with Cretton’s work on a recent blockbuster action film and felt he was a great fit to direct Naruto when the movie was first announced.

Having been a fan of his previous work and recognizing his talent for character-driven stories, I knew Destin Daniel Cretton was the perfect choice to direct the live-action Naruto adaptation, Kishimoto explained. Meeting Cretton confirmed my belief – he was receptive to my ideas, and I was confident we’d work well together. Currently, there’s no information available about when the film will be released.
