NASA Astronauts Begin First-Ever Medical Evacuation of Space Station

Four astronauts aboard the International Space Station are making an unprecedented move.

NASA astronauts Michael Fincke and Zena Cardman, along with Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, are returning to Earth sooner than planned. A medical problem with one of the crew members is the reason for their early departure, which is about a month ahead of schedule.

This will be the first-ever medical evacuation in the 25-year history of the ISS.

NASA stated in a press release on January 13th that they cannot release further information about the crew member’s medical condition due to privacy regulations, but confirmed the astronaut is currently stable.

The four astronauts who launched to space in August as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 mission are expected to return to Earth, splashing down off the coast of California early in the morning on January 15th.

Fincke explained on social media on January 11th that the decision was made intentionally to ensure patients could receive complete medical evaluations with all necessary diagnostic tools available locally. He acknowledged it was a difficult but correct choice.

He shared that it was a great honor to work on the International Space Station, calling it an amazing research facility and a testament to international collaboration. He found his time living and working with astronauts from other countries to be both a humbling and fulfilling experience.

NASA astronaut Christopher Williams will continue his mission on the International Space Station with Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikaev, despite the recent medical emergency and evacuation.

According to Fincke, the International Space Station is being left in capable hands. The current crew, who arrived in November, will keep things running until the arrival of Crew-12 in a few weeks.

He expressed gratitude for the team’s collaboration, pride in their accomplishment, and eagerness to return home to family and receive any necessary medical attention.
