We were excited when NBA The Run was announced earlier this year. Now that its open beta is almost here, we wanted to give you an overview of the game and explain how it’s building on ideas from other popular titles.
This game aims to capture the excitement of classic basketball titles like NBA Jam and NBA Street, and the developers at Play by Play have clearly worked hard to create something both nostalgic and new. Let’s take a closer look at how they’ve achieved that!
1. A Fun New Format
In The Run, you and two teammates battle three other players in street basketball games across three different modes. Knockout Squads lets you team up with friends (or AI teammates if you need them) to compete against other online teams. If you prefer to play alone or control the whole team, Knockout Solos lets you go head-to-head against online opponents.
And then there are Tournaments, which take the action up to another level.
2. Fast Paced And Fun
As you might expect from the title, The Run focuses on consistently winning and performing your best. To make this happen, the game features quick tournaments consisting of four rounds per run, with each run taking only two to three minutes. It’s built to be addictive, encouraging you to play ‘just one more time,’ and the game’s other features support a satisfying feeling of improvement.
There’s also the matter of what happens if you lose a round.
3. Failure Isn’t An Option

Winning matches helps you advance, but losing just one means your game is over and you have to begin again. This design choice is intentional, aiming for a quick and engaging experience similar to other popular games. It might feel challenging initially, but if The Run lives up to its potential, you’ll quickly lose track of time.
4. 11 Iconic Courts From Around The World
The game features a distinctive art style with vibrant, comic book-inspired graphics that will realistically recreate famous street courts around the globe. Players will be able to experience locations like Venice Beach, Harlem, and Dongdan, offering a diverse and exciting range of environments.
We’re especially excited about The Tenement, a spot where every floor of the nearby buildings offers a great view of what’s happening.
5. Controlled Chaos In Each Game
If you already find playing against equally skilled opponents tough, get ready for an extra challenge! Each game now includes random rule changes that can boost or weaken certain actions and abilities, making every match unpredictable and requiring you to adapt your strategy.
Choosing the right gear can help you win easily, but the wrong choices could make it a real struggle. Expect a tough and unpredictable path to victory.
6. Scoring Your Skills

Winning isn’t everything. You’ll also be judged on how well you play, your ability to adapt to changing situations, and how well you work with your team. The exact details of this system are still secret, but it’s designed to motivate players to give their best effort in every match.
This system, working with the others we discussed, should help maintain the quick speed we’re trying to reach.
7. An Expansive Launch Roster
Okay, so when this game finally comes out on June 9th, you’ll be able to play as 32 different players! They’ve got a ton of big names – I’m talking Stephen Curry, Scottie Barnes, LeBron James, Josh Giddey, and a whole bunch more. Seriously, that’s an awesome lineup, and it’s making me think this game is going to be seriously addictive, especially with all the other cool stuff they’ve hinted at coming later.
If you start watching The Run now, you’ll have even more players to follow when the 2026-27 season begins.
8. Rookie Variants
The game features five players with special ‘rookie’ versions – earlier iterations of their careers with unique abilities. These players are Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and LeBron James.
Now let’s talk about how skills work – that’s what we meant by saying skills can be different from each other.
9. Playing to Your Team’s Strengths

Choosing your team of three players adds another layer of strategy to the game. Each player has different strengths and weaknesses, and how well you adapt to random challenges depends on who you pick. Experiment with different team combinations to prepare for anything and take advantage of powerful synergies.
This adds a strategic element to choosing the team, because you’ll want to gain any possible advantage to prepare for the match’s unpredictable nature.
10. Masters of Their Craft
The team selection screen now includes a crown icon to highlight skills a player has fully mastered. Players also have star ratings for their skills, and most will have two top-tier, six-star abilities that you’ll need to use strategically during matches.
But there’s a catch, which seems to be a recurring theme. A few players have really stood out in certain skills and become well-known for them.
11. Street Legends
We’re also excited about the new Streetball Legends players. These are highly skilled athletes who excel in one area of the game, but have a corresponding weakness, making them strategically interesting and versatile additions to your team.
Shen Tong, Spin Cycle, El Gigante, DJ, and Bobbito will add some serious edge to your team. Plus, they each have three powerful, top-tier abilities instead of the standard two.
12. A Balanced Challenge

Despite its fast-paced and complex gameplay, The Run gently introduces players with a smooth learning curve and clear ways to improve. It’s a game that’s simple to pick up, but challenging to truly master. Thankfully, it’s designed to be addictive, because the best way to improve is through practice and building muscle memory.
13. Cosmetic Unlocks
Just so you know, you’ll unlock cosmetic items as you play, but skills and gameplay advantages are available to everyone right away. The only exception is for Street Legends content, which does require progression.
We anticipate these items will be released soon, given the game’s marketing focus on making it easy to pick up and highly engaging. If this happens, it would be great for players.
14. A Familiar Face In The Commentator’s Box
Bobbito Garcia isn’t just a playable character in Street Legend – he’s also the game’s announcer! He recorded a massive amount of dialogue – over 3,000 lines, totaling more than 50 hours of audio – for the game.
If you’ve enjoyed his work in other games, you’ll appreciate the energy he brings to every match. He’s recorded a huge amount of dialogue, which should prevent the repetitive lines often found in sports games from getting stale. We have a feeling players will explore all of his lines very quickly, though!
15. Miscellaneous

If you plan to play this game on a PC, you’ll need at least a 64-bit processor. As of right now, the other system requirements haven’t been released. The developers also want players to know that the game is built with strong network code, which should make the online gameplay feel smooth and react quickly to your actions.
So yeah, that’s the latest! I’m really excited about this new street ball game – it’s looking like a super fresh take on that classic arcade style. It’s dropping for PC and consoles this week, and honestly, I can’t wait to hit the court. Get your squads ready, because I’ll be there, and may the best team win!
