NBC is keeping its biggest franchise firmly in place.
NBCUniversal has officially renewed Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med, ensuring the continued success of the popular “One Chicago” franchise. These renewals will bring Chicago Fire to its 15th season, Chicago P.D. to its 14th, and Chicago Med to its 12th, with all three shows scheduled to return in Fall 2026 for the 2026-2027 television season.
Although most people anticipated these shows would be renewed, the announcement came a bit sooner than usual. NBC generally waits until April to confirm the future of its programs, right before presenting its advertising plans in May. This renewal demonstrates the network’s strong belief in the enduring popularity and success of this well-loved series.
NBC’s “One Chicago” dramas consistently perform well on Wednesday nights, and a recent crossover event on March 4th proved just how popular they are. All three shows – Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med – saw their highest viewership numbers of the season thanks to the event. The shows also continue to balance familiar, long-time cast members with exciting new faces.
Taylor Kinney, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Dermot Mulroney are among the stars of Chicago Fire. Chicago P.D. features Jason Beghe, Patrick John Flueger, and Marina Squerciati in leading roles. And on Chicago Med, Oliver Platt and S. Epatha Merkerson continue to be central figures in the cast.
The creative control of the franchise still rests with Dick Wolf and his longtime partner, Peter Jankowski, who work with a team of executive producers to ensure the shows share a connected universe. Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment jointly produce all three series.
As a big TV fan, I was happy to hear NBC is bringing back a couple of their comedies early – Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical both got the green light for new seasons. It’s not all good news though; a few shows are still on the bubble. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Stumble, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, and The Hunting Party. Sadly, Brilliant Minds didn’t make the cut and was cancelled back in February.
