Few shows were cancelled during the spring portion of the 2025-2026 TV season, but NBC’s Brilliant Minds was unfortunately one of them. Though the medical drama, featuring Zachary Quinto and Tamberla Perry, had already been removed from the schedule, the cancellation wasn’t officially announced for several months. NBC will allow the remaining episodes to air this summer, completing the show’s run. Despite only having five episodes left, many feel Brilliant Minds deserved a longer chance.
When the 2025-2026 TV season began, medical dramas were common, but Brilliant Minds stood out. Unlike shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med, it focused on the work of a neurologist and psychiatrist instead of surgeons, and the stories didn’t revolve around an emergency room. The show’s central mystery – Dr. Wolf’s (Quinto) face blindness – felt more realistic than the memory loss plot in Doc, and it was a serious drama, unlike the comedic tone of Best Medicine. Each week’s cases explored the complexities of the human brain.
The TV series Brilliant Minds was inspired by the real life of Dr. Oliver Sacks, a highly skilled neurologist who also experienced difficulty recognizing faces. The main characters were played by Quinto and Perry, and the supporting cast included Donna Murphy as Wolf’s mother, Teddy Sears as a recurring love interest, and Mandy Patinkin as his distant father. The show also featured several memorable guest actors.
Broadway veteran André De Shields gave a deeply moving performance in the first episode of the series. Steve Howey had a role as a patient before being cast in High Potential. Eric Dane joined Brilliant Minds to play a firefighter battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Sadly, this role was one of his last, as he passed away from the same disease in early 2026. While the show remained strong, circumstances prevented Brilliant Minds from continuing.
Brilliant Minds Has A Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score
Whether you enjoyed the story or not is a matter of opinion, but Brilliant Minds performed well compared to other shows. Its Rotten Tomatoes score is strong for a network drama, and it’s actually higher than every other renewed medical drama for the 2026-2027 season. Excluding Chicago Med (which doesn’t have a critic score), Brilliant Minds clearly outperformed its competitors.
| Medical Drama | Audience Score | Critics Score |
|---|---|---|
| Brilliant Minds | 81% | 88% |
| Doc | 78% | 46% |
| Chicago Med | 76% | — |
| Grey’s Anatomy | 72% | 84% |
| Best Medicine | 64% | 77% |
The differences in ratings between medical dramas are quite surprising, particularly when looking at how they compare to Brilliant Minds. While critics haven’t loved Doc on Fox, audiences clearly disagree – it’s a big hit with viewers. Grey’s Anatomy on ABC actually receives better reviews from professional critics than from its dedicated fans, but its strong following has kept the show running for an impressive 22 seasons and beyond. At the bottom of the list, Fox’s Best Medicine is unpopular with viewers, which might suggest that audiences generally prefer straightforward hospital dramas over shows that try to blend humor with medical storylines.
As a TV fan, I wasn’t totally surprised when CBS cancelled Watson after two seasons. Looking at the numbers, it’s pretty clear why. The show, starring Morris Chestnut, only managed a 34% audience score and a 53% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Honestly, those numbers don’t really scream ‘renewal,’ do they? It just wasn’t performing like Brilliant Minds, which was a much bigger hit with both viewers and critics.
Why Brilliant Minds Was Cancelled After 2 Seasons
Despite positive audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Brilliant Minds didn’t attract many viewers. The show, starring Zachary Quinto, was NBC’s lowest-rated series and saw a significant drop in ratings between its first and second seasons. This decline was especially surprising because the show continued to air on Monday nights after The Voice, maintaining the same timeslot. So far this spring, Stumble, a well-received mockumentary about cheerleading, is NBC’s only other canceled primetime show.
Jeff Bader, who leads program planning strategy at NBCUniversal, explained the cancellation of the shows Brilliant Minds and Stumble. He shared with Deadline that the decision was made to free up some broadcast time.
We’re working with a really packed schedule. To prioritize sports coverage and make space for promising new shows, we unfortunately had to cancel some of our current favorites.
Lisa Katz, head of scripted content at NBCUniversal Television, stated that Brilliant Minds has “a strong and conclusive ending,” and that viewers deserve to know how the story wraps up. Currently, there’s no indication the show will find a new home elsewhere, or that NBC will change its mind about cancellation. It appears the series is ending for Dr. Wolf and his team.
Okay, so things aren’t perfect, but as a fan, I’m still holding out hope for this show! There are five episodes left, and I’m really hoping they can pull it together for a strong finish. You can catch new episodes of Brilliant Minds every Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC, and if you miss it, they’ll be up on Peacock to stream.
