NCIS Officially Recasts 139-Episode Veteran For Upcoming Special Appearance

CBS is bringing in a new actor to play a familiar face from the show NCIS for a special appearance in the prequel series, NCIS: Origins. Unlike some other long-running TV dramas, NCIS rarely recasts roles. Typically, when a character leaves the show, the writers give them a proper send-off or leave the possibility of them returning in the future.

As a big fan of the NCIS franchise, I’ve noticed something interesting since NCIS: Origins started. It’s the first show to go back and show us the very beginnings of the team, and because of that, we’re seeing younger versions of characters we already know and love. Mark Harmon and Muse Watson, who played Gibbs and Franks for so long, have passed those roles on to Austin Stowell and Kyle Schmid. And it looks like season two of NCIS: Origins is going to continue that trend, bringing in yet another familiar face… but with a new actor playing them!

According to Deadline, Shea Buckner will join the cast of NCIS: Origins as a young version of Dwayne Pride in a future episode of season two. Scott Bakula originally portrayed the character in the original NCIS series and later led the spinoff NCIS: New Orleans, which concluded in 2021.

In mid-November, reports surfaced that CBS is searching for a younger actor to play Pride for the upcoming prequel series. While many fans anticipated this, it’s great news for the show, as Scott Bakula previously portrayed the character in NCIS: New Orleans, establishing a backstory with Gibbs. According to established show lore, Pride, Gibbs, and Franks were once members of the “Fed Five” – a highly skilled group of agents working for NIS in the early 1990s. The report also indicates CBS is casting actors to play younger versions of Dan McLane and Felix Betts, completing the original team.

Over the past few years, Buckner has been on several popular TV shows, including The Rookie, The Blacklist, Equalizer, Animal Kingdom, FBI, and recently, Only Murders in the Building. While some were initially unsure, NCIS: Origins has become a strong series, particularly in its second season. Casting is challenging because the show needs to align with the established character development of the original NCIS series. However, with a solid main cast and guest stars like Young Lara Macy, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding Buckner’s portrayal of Young Pride.

Details about Young Pride’s appearance in NCIS: Origins suggest he’ll have a smaller role in season 2. The plan is to fully explore his story, along with the rest of the “Fed Five,” in season 3 – if CBS renews the show. Hopefully, the network will make a decision soon, particularly as Gibbs’ storyline is about to become more compelling.

NCIS’ block airs every Tuesday starting at 8 PM ET on CBS.
